We ultrasound sheep so we know what to expect in good time before they lamb.

Ultrasounding sheep for pregnancies today and WOW!! What a great scan!
Ruby surprised us with twins, and someone else we love also had a sweet surprise!!

We ultrasound sheep so we know what to expect in good time before they lamb.  We can feed them better, or even skip them over to the next group to be exposed.  This is way more efficient than keep ewes on the program for 5 months before then realizing they are not pregnant.

It's something that I've seen a lot of here on YouTube, and realized that I am surrounded by the amazing sounds and sights of sheep farming everyday.

So today, I stopped talking.
And appreciated the calm, rhythmic everyday motions of what I call chores.
I hope you enjoy it! view all

Monday.
The beginning of a two month journey of farming solo.   We ran out of corn in the ewe barn literally the day after Mark left.  I'm also beginning the drying off process on my early December lambing group!!  Can you believe that?

I dropped Mark off at the airport on Saturday night, and on the way we had a Q&A.
NOW, you will hear the reason he left me.
(unless, of course, you follow his channel too!  LOL) view all

How much does it cost us to raise a lamb from weaning age (8 weeks) to market (105 lbs)?

How much does it cost us to raise a lamb from weaning age (8 weeks) to market (105 lbs)?

I've been trying to add a little more business to my videos, without it being too boring (OR WRONG)...

Numbers are not my strong suit, but know the importance of how they are the driving force behind any good business.

Instead of actual figures, I broke down the main costs of goods sold and did a percentage off an actual lamb cheque so you could see how many lambs are left to sell after these expenses...

These are very rough, so please go easy on me... LOL

And also, always look hard at your own numbers... it's amazing what can maybe be missed or thought to be ok, when in reality it could be made better or more efficient.

I hope this gives a little idea as to what it costs to grow a product on a farm. view all

Weaning lambs has NEVER GONE THIS WELL!! And I think I owe some of the success to Temple Grandin... although, I've never really thought about it before!

Setting up for any kind of movement with animals requires understanding how that animal behaves...

How it moves, thinks, reacts.

And build your handling systems around that behavior.
I don't know a lot about Temple Grandin, but I know through reading some articles, this is how she designs handling systems.  She gets to know her animals first.

She lets them show her what handling system design works best for them!

Let's see how I did!!

Tuesday was rough.

But it was little acts of kindness from friends, neighbours and YOU (my online family) who pushed me through.

The rest of the week was more post wean sheep and lamb observations.  They have transitioned well!

Lesson for the week...

Believe in yourself.  Own your truth.  Share your truth.

Because if you give that away, they can't really steal it.

I'm out checking the pots with my best mate shit fisherman of a cousin Aaron Seipel and what he lacks in fishing skills he makes up for with crab pots pulling skills.
