1

00:00:00,030 --> 00:00:01,600

good morning everybody today for this

2

00:00:01,800 --> 00:00:03,579

video I'm gonna just show you everything

3

00:00:03,779 --> 00:00:06,809

I do today that is homestead work

4

00:00:07,009 --> 00:00:17,919

starting now the boys are fertilizing

5

00:00:18,118 --> 00:00:20,409

these greens with fish fertilizer and

6

00:00:20,609 --> 00:00:22,210

they're just pouring it down each line

7

00:00:22,410 --> 00:00:24,159

with a pretty concentrated fish

8

00:00:24,359 --> 00:00:26,169

fertilizer and then we'll water this bed

9

00:00:26,368 --> 00:00:30,589

when we're done pull out those plants

10

00:00:31,989 --> 00:00:52,498

[Music]

11

00:00:52,698 --> 00:00:54,779

as much as possible it's planning dirt

12

00:00:54,979 --> 00:00:57,669

not in the newer

13

00:00:57,869 --> 00:01:00,498

and then just make sure that if you have

14

00:01:00,698 --> 00:01:01,849

locked the brakes make sure they get to

15

00:01:02,049 --> 00:01:03,419

spread out

16

00:01:03,619 --> 00:01:06,119

is that we want oil around them as much

17

00:01:06,319 --> 00:01:10,019

as all the raspberries are in and two

18

00:01:10,219 --> 00:01:12,750

other berry plants raspberries elder

19

00:01:12,950 --> 00:01:14,369

various at the bottom justice is

20

00:01:14,569 --> 00:01:15,689

watering them and then it's breakfast

21

00:01:15,890 --> 00:01:17,429

time you got the dirt baby and we're

22

00:01:17,629 --> 00:01:19,528

gonna go eat breakfast we're dirt baby

23

00:01:19,728 --> 00:01:21,450

we're checking the cow for subclinical

24

00:01:21,650 --> 00:01:24,689

mastitis so I've got these four jars to

25

00:01:24,890 --> 00:01:27,569

take samples from four quarters to the

26

00:01:27,769 --> 00:01:30,750

barn to milk after chasing a goat that

27

00:01:30,950 --> 00:01:45,079

was out here's my right back left back

28

00:01:45,280 --> 00:01:52,558

her left front and her right front now

29

00:01:52,759 --> 00:01:53,969

we'll just finish smoking out her

30

00:01:54,170 --> 00:01:54,939

backside

31

00:01:55,140 --> 00:02:03,540

[Music]

32

00:02:17,360 --> 00:02:25,810

[Music]

33

00:02:29,889 --> 00:02:46,920

more raspberry plants came in to mail we

34

00:02:47,120 --> 00:02:50,300

have four Triple Crowns blackberries

35

00:02:50,500 --> 00:02:55,140

three black Jim blackberries I can't

36

00:02:55,340 --> 00:02:57,989

pronounce these we watch cheetah

37

00:02:58,188 --> 00:03:02,969

blackberries six double gold raspberries

38

00:03:03,169 --> 00:03:07,230

and four characters these plants we will

39

00:03:07,430 --> 00:03:08,700

not be planting today they have to be

40

00:03:08,900 --> 00:03:10,980

hardened off which means introduced

41

00:03:11,180 --> 00:03:12,509

slowly to direct sunlight they've

42

00:03:12,709 --> 00:03:14,129

probably been grown in a greenhouse or

43

00:03:14,329 --> 00:03:16,289

under State cloth and you can kill them

44

00:03:16,489 --> 00:03:17,310

if you just put them straight out in the

45

00:03:17,509 --> 00:03:19,050

Sun so we'll let them get about two or

46

00:03:19,250 --> 00:03:21,269

three hours of Sun today and each day

47

00:03:21,468 --> 00:03:24,118

for the next couple days and then we'll

48

00:03:24,318 --> 00:03:25,980

plan them out next it's time for a quick

49

00:03:26,180 --> 00:03:27,989

herbal orientation for this guy who

50

00:03:28,188 --> 00:03:30,330

might be sent to run herb errands for

51

00:03:30,530 --> 00:03:33,149

cooking so you know green onions right

52

00:03:33,348 --> 00:03:36,659

pay attention now okay ready cilantro

53

00:03:36,859 --> 00:03:38,789

this one's dill if she wants to do

54

00:03:38,989 --> 00:03:40,368

that's what she wants this is chives

55

00:03:40,568 --> 00:03:42,539

it's kind of like onions but it's like

56

00:03:42,739 --> 00:03:45,929

tiny in this oregano this is called

57

00:03:46,128 --> 00:03:49,890

oregano this is called time this one is

58

00:03:50,090 --> 00:03:54,439

called sage this one is summer savory

59

00:03:54,639 --> 00:03:56,939

she wanted oregano when we send you out

60

00:03:57,139 --> 00:03:59,759

to get herbs take scissors and just clip

61

00:03:59,959 --> 00:04:01,020

off little pieces like that

62

00:04:01,219 --> 00:04:08,279

okay we're using this portable somatic

63

00:04:08,479 --> 00:04:11,129

cell count kit to detect subclinical

64

00:04:11,329 --> 00:04:12,779

mastitis now I didn't tell you why we're

65

00:04:12,979 --> 00:04:15,719

doing this we're doing this because when

66

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,718

we got Alice the milk cow her milk at

67

00:04:18,918 --> 00:04:22,110

least from back quarters tasted salty

68

00:04:22,310 --> 00:04:24,600

salty tasting milk can be a sign of

69

00:04:24,800 --> 00:04:26,699

mastitis we've also been reading about

70

00:04:26,899 --> 00:04:29,040

it and there's a lot of other possible

71

00:04:29,240 --> 00:04:30,449

reasons there's actually a ton of people

72

00:04:30,649 --> 00:04:33,019

right now on all the online cow boards

73

00:04:33,218 --> 00:04:35,189

posting about their salty tasting milk

74

00:04:35,389 --> 00:04:37,110

we're gonna do this test though this may

75

00:04:37,310 --> 00:04:39,809

help us know if she actually

76

00:04:40,009 --> 00:04:41,910

besides the concern would be that she

77

00:04:42,110 --> 00:04:43,588

might be like in an early stage of

78

00:04:43,788 --> 00:04:47,100

mastitis she actually her milk looks

79

00:04:47,300 --> 00:04:50,519

great and her udder looks fine so a lot

80

00:04:50,718 --> 00:04:53,429

is reassuring and we're gonna refer back

81

00:04:53,629 --> 00:04:55,709

to our instructions that Wilders eating

82

00:04:55,908 --> 00:04:59,968

four drops in milk okay we're okay no we

83

00:05:00,168 --> 00:05:02,549

only need four drops of milk on each one

84

00:05:02,749 --> 00:05:07,169

of these three four we're gonna rinse

85

00:05:07,369 --> 00:05:09,629

that out and then four drops of

86

00:05:09,829 --> 00:05:13,829

developer on each trip we've got to wait

87

00:05:14,028 --> 00:05:15,359

five minutes so while we're waiting I'm

88

00:05:15,559 --> 00:05:17,489

gonna taste all these milks I'm just

89

00:05:17,689 --> 00:05:31,170

tasting the left-back salty you're right

90

00:05:31,370 --> 00:05:34,538

back tastes really good to me

91

00:05:34,749 --> 00:05:37,649

right front tastes good left front

92

00:05:37,848 --> 00:05:38,879

tastes good they all taste good at the

93

00:05:39,079 --> 00:05:40,439

left back though tastes bad here's the

94

00:05:40,639 --> 00:05:43,139

test results left front is white right

95

00:05:43,338 --> 00:05:47,218

front right back and then here is the

96

00:05:47,418 --> 00:05:49,679

left back and what we're supposed to do

97

00:05:49,879 --> 00:05:52,649

is compare the color to this test strip

98

00:05:52,848 --> 00:05:54,569

honestly it's closest to this one which

99

00:05:54,769 --> 00:06:02,639

is 1500 cells times a thousand from Noli

100

00:06:02,838 --> 00:06:04,379

so it looks like she may have mastitis

101

00:06:04,579 --> 00:06:06,899

in her left back quarter this too this

102

00:06:07,098 --> 00:06:08,670

isn't a definitive diagnostic test

103

00:06:08,870 --> 00:06:10,468

format size but it looks like she

104

00:06:10,668 --> 00:06:14,189

probably does so we have some learning

105

00:06:14,389 --> 00:06:16,528

to do about treating mastitis we're

106

00:06:16,728 --> 00:06:18,059

doing everything right now we're milking

107

00:06:18,259 --> 00:06:19,920

her out in that back left quarter

108

00:06:20,120 --> 00:06:22,559

especially and her milk actually looks

109

00:06:22,759 --> 00:06:24,329

good it's not really it's not chunky or

110

00:06:24,528 --> 00:06:27,430

gloppy or anything

111

00:06:29,060 --> 00:06:31,960

this is by far my least favorite thing

112

00:06:32,160 --> 00:06:34,360

that we do around here I'm gonna dis bud

113

00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:37,449

all the goats there's a lot of reasons

114

00:06:37,649 --> 00:06:41,430

we do this I do think that it's not

115

00:06:41,629 --> 00:06:43,509

necessary if you're planning on keeping

116

00:06:43,709 --> 00:06:46,420

a goat but most people buying goats

117

00:06:46,620 --> 00:06:49,540

expect it and it would be a big turn-off

118

00:06:49,740 --> 00:06:52,000

to many people but we're going to knock

119

00:06:52,199 --> 00:06:53,590

it out really quick and let these babies

120

00:06:53,790 --> 00:06:57,830

go back to their mum

121

00:07:01,589 --> 00:07:03,559

all right you're done let's get you back

122

00:07:03,759 --> 00:07:07,520

to mommy now it's lucky to Luckys turn

123

00:07:07,720 --> 00:07:09,910

poor little lady sorry girl

124

00:07:10,110 --> 00:07:12,910

and that was Molly's turn sorry lady

125

00:07:13,110 --> 00:07:18,079

alright she's done these babies they're

126

00:07:18,279 --> 00:07:19,278

not gonna probably let me get close

127

00:07:19,478 --> 00:07:21,468

they're gonna say we remember what you

128

00:07:21,668 --> 00:07:23,960

just did to us hey guys

129

00:07:24,160 --> 00:07:28,929

a little burnt heads you guys are cute

130

00:07:29,129 --> 00:07:31,939

and that should be the lastest Budig I

131

00:07:32,139 --> 00:07:35,689

have to do this year she that calf is

132

00:07:35,889 --> 00:07:37,850

polled and we don't have a name for yet

133

00:07:38,050 --> 00:07:40,338

that calf and this guy you can see his

134

00:07:40,538 --> 00:07:42,290

horns I'm gonna let his horns grow

135

00:07:42,490 --> 00:07:44,959

though I'll tell you why because he's

136

00:07:45,158 --> 00:07:46,730

gonna be beefed within a year he's a

137

00:07:46,930 --> 00:07:48,350

good size two month old calf he's gonna

138

00:07:48,550 --> 00:07:50,540

be beefed within a year we're not we

139

00:07:50,740 --> 00:07:53,149

don't have to sell him yeah I just don't

140

00:07:53,348 --> 00:07:54,588

think it's gonna be a problem so he'll

141

00:07:54,788 --> 00:07:56,329

have some little horns by the time we

142

00:07:56,528 --> 00:07:57,739

eat but Sherman you can probably hear

143

00:07:57,939 --> 00:07:59,359

Breanna is mowing down here and you

144

00:07:59,559 --> 00:08:00,739

might say why aren't you mowing you're

145

00:08:00,939 --> 00:08:03,439

the man between us that's the more

146

00:08:03,639 --> 00:08:05,838

favorable job rather than we're doing

147

00:08:06,038 --> 00:08:07,910

work with this guy in your back I love

148

00:08:08,110 --> 00:08:09,829

wearing this guy but it just makes it

149

00:08:10,028 --> 00:08:12,619

hard to do work and so that is the job

150

00:08:12,819 --> 00:08:14,509

that both of us wanted she's doing it

151

00:08:14,709 --> 00:08:17,749

last time she mowed was the day that he

152

00:08:17,949 --> 00:08:21,079

was born I'm gonna link that video right

153

00:08:21,278 --> 00:08:23,809

up here I never get it right I'm gonna

154

00:08:24,009 --> 00:08:26,239

link that video right up here check it

155

00:08:26,439 --> 00:08:27,980

out it's actually hilarious if you

156

00:08:28,180 --> 00:08:29,689

haven't seen it check it out next I'm

157

00:08:29,889 --> 00:08:32,120

gonna burn this area I've burnt it

158

00:08:32,320 --> 00:08:33,468

before this is where our blueberries are

159

00:08:33,668 --> 00:08:35,269

going I want this grass to be dead so we

160

00:08:35,469 --> 00:08:36,828

can mulch and not have the grass come up

161

00:08:37,028 --> 00:08:39,588

through the mulch oh by the way guys our

162

00:08:39,788 --> 00:08:40,669

t-shirt

163

00:08:40,870 --> 00:08:43,218

Home Sweet Home stead is very popular

164

00:08:43,418 --> 00:08:46,099

t-shirt a ton of y'all loved it is for

165

00:08:46,299 --> 00:08:48,679

sale again the design color this time is

166

00:08:48,879 --> 00:08:51,198

white and there's a lot more choices of

167

00:08:51,399 --> 00:08:52,490

t-shirt colors there's some really cool

168

00:08:52,690 --> 00:08:54,159

ones I've got some coming in the mail

169

00:08:54,360 --> 00:08:57,498

here's a picture of the shirt check it

170

00:08:57,698 --> 00:09:00,318

out links below the video all right done

171

00:09:00,519 --> 00:09:03,289

with that that was fun but I ran out of

172

00:09:03,490 --> 00:09:06,229

camera battery I've carefully burned

173

00:09:06,429 --> 00:09:08,179

around my apple trees not right next to

174

00:09:08,379 --> 00:09:13,688

him hey how's mowing going good Wow

175

00:09:13,889 --> 00:09:16,758

inside this box or fence post pick tail

176

00:09:16,958 --> 00:09:19,188

fence post for rotational grazing we've

177

00:09:19,389 --> 00:09:21,559

been wanting to actually rotationally

178

00:09:21,759 --> 00:09:24,289

graze our pasture forever and we're just

179

00:09:24,490 --> 00:09:25,519

now getting the equipment where it's

180

00:09:25,720 --> 00:09:29,129

actually feasible to do it

181

00:09:42,698 --> 00:09:44,459

well folks it's 5:30

182

00:09:44,659 --> 00:09:46,969

I didn't get done everything on my list

183

00:09:47,169 --> 00:09:49,618

actually I was hoping to rototiller the

184

00:09:49,818 --> 00:09:51,659

garden today but there was a lot of goat

185

00:09:51,860 --> 00:09:53,308

chasing you didn't see unfortunately I

186

00:09:53,509 --> 00:09:55,139

fixed that there was a hole in the fence

187

00:09:55,339 --> 00:09:57,238

basically where the buck was squeezing

188

00:09:57,438 --> 00:09:59,368

out through the fence and he got out I

189

00:09:59,568 --> 00:10:02,248

think four times he took one bite off a

190

00:10:02,448 --> 00:10:07,919

cherry tree buck this has been another

191

00:10:08,120 --> 00:10:11,188

great day on the homestead I'll see you

192

00:10:11,389 --> 00:10:12,839

in another video yeah just go go go

193

00:10:13,039 --> 00:10:15,299

around here sweet homestead sir yeah

194

00:10:15,500 --> 00:10:16,738

don't forget to get your home sweet home

195

00:10:16,938 --> 00:10:18,599

set sure it actually looks sharper than

196

00:10:18,799 --> 00:10:20,698

that because this in white now and that

197

00:10:20,899 --> 00:10:24,188

white just pops up all the colors

1

00:00:00,030 --> 00:00:01,600

good morning everybody today for this

2

00:00:01,800 --> 00:00:03,579

video I'm gonna just show you everything

3

00:00:03,779 --> 00:00:06,809

I do today that is homestead work

4

00:00:07,009 --> 00:00:17,919

starting now the boys are fertilizing

5

00:00:18,118 --> 00:00:20,409

these greens with fish fertilizer and

6

00:00:20,609 --> 00:00:22,210

they're just pouring it down each line

7

00:00:22,410 --> 00:00:24,159

with a pretty concentrated fish

8

00:00:24,359 --> 00:00:26,169

fertilizer and then we'll water this bed

9

00:00:26,368 --> 00:00:30,589

when we're done pull out those plants

10

00:00:31,989 --> 00:00:52,498

[Music]

11

00:00:52,698 --> 00:00:54,779

as much as possible it's planning dirt

12

00:00:54,979 --> 00:00:57,669

not in the newer

13

00:00:57,869 --> 00:01:00,498

and then just make sure that if you have

14

00:01:00,698 --> 00:01:01,849

locked the brakes make sure they get to

15

00:01:02,049 --> 00:01:03,419

spread out

16

00:01:03,619 --> 00:01:06,119

is that we want oil around them as much

17

00:01:06,319 --> 00:01:10,019

as all the raspberries are in and two

18

00:01:10,219 --> 00:01:12,750

other berry plants raspberries elder

19

00:01:12,950 --> 00:01:14,369

various at the bottom justice is

20

00:01:14,569 --> 00:01:15,689

watering them and then it's breakfast

21

00:01:15,890 --> 00:01:17,429

time you got the dirt baby and we're

22

00:01:17,629 --> 00:01:19,528

gonna go eat breakfast we're dirt baby

23

00:01:19,728 --> 00:01:21,450

we're checking the cow for subclinical

24

00:01:21,650 --> 00:01:24,689

mastitis so I've got these four jars to

25

00:01:24,890 --> 00:01:27,569

take samples from four quarters to the

26

00:01:27,769 --> 00:01:30,750

barn to milk after chasing a goat that

27

00:01:30,950 --> 00:01:45,079

was out here's my right back left back

28

00:01:45,280 --> 00:01:52,558

her left front and her right front now

29

00:01:52,759 --> 00:01:53,969

we'll just finish smoking out her

30

00:01:54,170 --> 00:01:54,939

backside

31

00:01:55,140 --> 00:02:03,540

[Music]

32

00:02:17,360 --> 00:02:25,810

[Music]

33

00:02:29,889 --> 00:02:46,920

more raspberry plants came in to mail we

34

00:02:47,120 --> 00:02:50,300

have four Triple Crowns blackberries

35

00:02:50,500 --> 00:02:55,140

three black Jim blackberries I can't

36

00:02:55,340 --> 00:02:57,989

pronounce these we watch cheetah

37

00:02:58,188 --> 00:03:02,969

blackberries six double gold raspberries

38

00:03:03,169 --> 00:03:07,230

and four characters these plants we will

39

00:03:07,430 --> 00:03:08,700

not be planting today they have to be

40

00:03:08,900 --> 00:03:10,980

hardened off which means introduced

41

00:03:11,180 --> 00:03:12,509

slowly to direct sunlight they've

42

00:03:12,709 --> 00:03:14,129

probably been grown in a greenhouse or

43

00:03:14,329 --> 00:03:16,289

under State cloth and you can kill them

44

00:03:16,489 --> 00:03:17,310

if you just put them straight out in the

45

00:03:17,509 --> 00:03:19,050

Sun so we'll let them get about two or

46

00:03:19,250 --> 00:03:21,269

three hours of Sun today and each day

47

00:03:21,468 --> 00:03:24,118

for the next couple days and then we'll

48

00:03:24,318 --> 00:03:25,980

plan them out next it's time for a quick

49

00:03:26,180 --> 00:03:27,989

herbal orientation for this guy who

50

00:03:28,188 --> 00:03:30,330

might be sent to run herb errands for

51

00:03:30,530 --> 00:03:33,149

cooking so you know green onions right

52

00:03:33,348 --> 00:03:36,659

pay attention now okay ready cilantro

53

00:03:36,859 --> 00:03:38,789

this one's dill if she wants to do

54

00:03:38,989 --> 00:03:40,368

that's what she wants this is chives

55

00:03:40,568 --> 00:03:42,539

it's kind of like onions but it's like

56

00:03:42,739 --> 00:03:45,929

tiny in this oregano this is called

57

00:03:46,128 --> 00:03:49,890

oregano this is called time this one is

58

00:03:50,090 --> 00:03:54,439

called sage this one is summer savory

59

00:03:54,639 --> 00:03:56,939

she wanted oregano when we send you out

60

00:03:57,139 --> 00:03:59,759

to get herbs take scissors and just clip

61

00:03:59,959 --> 00:04:01,020

off little pieces like that

62

00:04:01,219 --> 00:04:08,279

okay we're using this portable somatic

63

00:04:08,479 --> 00:04:11,129

cell count kit to detect subclinical

64

00:04:11,329 --> 00:04:12,779

mastitis now I didn't tell you why we're

65

00:04:12,979 --> 00:04:15,719

doing this we're doing this because when

66

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,718

we got Alice the milk cow her milk at

67

00:04:18,918 --> 00:04:22,110

least from back quarters tasted salty

68

00:04:22,310 --> 00:04:24,600

salty tasting milk can be a sign of

69

00:04:24,800 --> 00:04:26,699

mastitis we've also been reading about

70

00:04:26,899 --> 00:04:29,040

it and there's a lot of other possible

71

00:04:29,240 --> 00:04:30,449

reasons there's actually a ton of people

72

00:04:30,649 --> 00:04:33,019

right now on all the online cow boards

73

00:04:33,218 --> 00:04:35,189

posting about their salty tasting milk

74

00:04:35,389 --> 00:04:37,110

we're gonna do this test though this may

75

00:04:37,310 --> 00:04:39,809

help us know if she actually

76

00:04:40,009 --> 00:04:41,910

besides the concern would be that she

77

00:04:42,110 --> 00:04:43,588

might be like in an early stage of

78

00:04:43,788 --> 00:04:47,100

mastitis she actually her milk looks

79

00:04:47,300 --> 00:04:50,519

great and her udder looks fine so a lot

80

00:04:50,718 --> 00:04:53,429

is reassuring and we're gonna refer back

81

00:04:53,629 --> 00:04:55,709

to our instructions that Wilders eating

82

00:04:55,908 --> 00:04:59,968

four drops in milk okay we're okay no we

83

00:05:00,168 --> 00:05:02,549

only need four drops of milk on each one

84

00:05:02,749 --> 00:05:07,169

of these three four we're gonna rinse

85

00:05:07,369 --> 00:05:09,629

that out and then four drops of

86

00:05:09,829 --> 00:05:13,829

developer on each trip we've got to wait

87

00:05:14,028 --> 00:05:15,359

five minutes so while we're waiting I'm

88

00:05:15,559 --> 00:05:17,489

gonna taste all these milks I'm just

89

00:05:17,689 --> 00:05:31,170

tasting the left-back salty you're right

90

00:05:31,370 --> 00:05:34,538

back tastes really good to me

91

00:05:34,749 --> 00:05:37,649

right front tastes good left front

92

00:05:37,848 --> 00:05:38,879

tastes good they all taste good at the

93

00:05:39,079 --> 00:05:40,439

left back though tastes bad here's the

94

00:05:40,639 --> 00:05:43,139

test results left front is white right

95

00:05:43,338 --> 00:05:47,218

front right back and then here is the

96

00:05:47,418 --> 00:05:49,679

left back and what we're supposed to do

97

00:05:49,879 --> 00:05:52,649

is compare the color to this test strip

98

00:05:52,848 --> 00:05:54,569

honestly it's closest to this one which

99

00:05:54,769 --> 00:06:02,639

is 1500 cells times a thousand from Noli

100

00:06:02,838 --> 00:06:04,379

so it looks like she may have mastitis

101

00:06:04,579 --> 00:06:06,899

in her left back quarter this too this

102

00:06:07,098 --> 00:06:08,670

isn't a definitive diagnostic test

103

00:06:08,870 --> 00:06:10,468

format size but it looks like she

104

00:06:10,668 --> 00:06:14,189

probably does so we have some learning

105

00:06:14,389 --> 00:06:16,528

to do about treating mastitis we're

106

00:06:16,728 --> 00:06:18,059

doing everything right now we're milking

107

00:06:18,259 --> 00:06:19,920

her out in that back left quarter

108

00:06:20,120 --> 00:06:22,559

especially and her milk actually looks

109

00:06:22,759 --> 00:06:24,329

good it's not really it's not chunky or

110

00:06:24,528 --> 00:06:27,430

gloppy or anything

111

00:06:29,060 --> 00:06:31,960

this is by far my least favorite thing

112

00:06:32,160 --> 00:06:34,360

that we do around here I'm gonna dis bud

113

00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:37,449

all the goats there's a lot of reasons

114

00:06:37,649 --> 00:06:41,430

we do this I do think that it's not

115

00:06:41,629 --> 00:06:43,509

necessary if you're planning on keeping

116

00:06:43,709 --> 00:06:46,420

a goat but most people buying goats

117

00:06:46,620 --> 00:06:49,540

expect it and it would be a big turn-off

118

00:06:49,740 --> 00:06:52,000

to many people but we're going to knock

119

00:06:52,199 --> 00:06:53,590

it out really quick and let these babies

120

00:06:53,790 --> 00:06:57,830

go back to their mum

121

00:07:01,589 --> 00:07:03,559

all right you're done let's get you back

122

00:07:03,759 --> 00:07:07,520

to mommy now it's lucky to Luckys turn

123

00:07:07,720 --> 00:07:09,910

poor little lady sorry girl

124

00:07:10,110 --> 00:07:12,910

and that was Molly's turn sorry lady

125

00:07:13,110 --> 00:07:18,079

alright she's done these babies they're

126

00:07:18,279 --> 00:07:19,278

not gonna probably let me get close

127

00:07:19,478 --> 00:07:21,468

they're gonna say we remember what you

128

00:07:21,668 --> 00:07:23,960

just did to us hey guys

129

00:07:24,160 --> 00:07:28,929

a little burnt heads you guys are cute

130

00:07:29,129 --> 00:07:31,939

and that should be the lastest Budig I

131

00:07:32,139 --> 00:07:35,689

have to do this year she that calf is

132

00:07:35,889 --> 00:07:37,850

polled and we don't have a name for yet

133

00:07:38,050 --> 00:07:40,338

that calf and this guy you can see his

134

00:07:40,538 --> 00:07:42,290

horns I'm gonna let his horns grow

135

00:07:42,490 --> 00:07:44,959

though I'll tell you why because he's

136

00:07:45,158 --> 00:07:46,730

gonna be beefed within a year he's a

137

00:07:46,930 --> 00:07:48,350

good size two month old calf he's gonna

138

00:07:48,550 --> 00:07:50,540

be beefed within a year we're not we

139

00:07:50,740 --> 00:07:53,149

don't have to sell him yeah I just don't

140

00:07:53,348 --> 00:07:54,588

think it's gonna be a problem so he'll

141

00:07:54,788 --> 00:07:56,329

have some little horns by the time we

142

00:07:56,528 --> 00:07:57,739

eat but Sherman you can probably hear

143

00:07:57,939 --> 00:07:59,359

Breanna is mowing down here and you

144

00:07:59,559 --> 00:08:00,739

might say why aren't you mowing you're

145

00:08:00,939 --> 00:08:03,439

the man between us that's the more

146

00:08:03,639 --> 00:08:05,838

favorable job rather than we're doing

147

00:08:06,038 --> 00:08:07,910

work with this guy in your back I love

148

00:08:08,110 --> 00:08:09,829

wearing this guy but it just makes it

149

00:08:10,028 --> 00:08:12,619

hard to do work and so that is the job

150

00:08:12,819 --> 00:08:14,509

that both of us wanted she's doing it

151

00:08:14,709 --> 00:08:17,749

last time she mowed was the day that he

152

00:08:17,949 --> 00:08:21,079

was born I'm gonna link that video right

153

00:08:21,278 --> 00:08:23,809

up here I never get it right I'm gonna

154

00:08:24,009 --> 00:08:26,239

link that video right up here check it

155

00:08:26,439 --> 00:08:27,980

out it's actually hilarious if you

156

00:08:28,180 --> 00:08:29,689

haven't seen it check it out next I'm

157

00:08:29,889 --> 00:08:32,120

gonna burn this area I've burnt it

158

00:08:32,320 --> 00:08:33,468

before this is where our blueberries are

159

00:08:33,668 --> 00:08:35,269

going I want this grass to be dead so we

160

00:08:35,469 --> 00:08:36,828

can mulch and not have the grass come up

161

00:08:37,028 --> 00:08:39,588

through the mulch oh by the way guys our

162

00:08:39,788 --> 00:08:40,669

t-shirt

163

00:08:40,870 --> 00:08:43,218

Home Sweet Home stead is very popular

164

00:08:43,418 --> 00:08:46,099

t-shirt a ton of y'all loved it is for

165

00:08:46,299 --> 00:08:48,679

sale again the design color this time is

166

00:08:48,879 --> 00:08:51,198

white and there's a lot more choices of

167

00:08:51,399 --> 00:08:52,490

t-shirt colors there's some really cool

168

00:08:52,690 --> 00:08:54,159

ones I've got some coming in the mail

169

00:08:54,360 --> 00:08:57,498

here's a picture of the shirt check it

170

00:08:57,698 --> 00:09:00,318

out links below the video all right done

171

00:09:00,519 --> 00:09:03,289

with that that was fun but I ran out of

172

00:09:03,490 --> 00:09:06,229

camera battery I've carefully burned

173

00:09:06,429 --> 00:09:08,179

around my apple trees not right next to

174

00:09:08,379 --> 00:09:13,688

him hey how's mowing going good Wow

175

00:09:13,889 --> 00:09:16,758

inside this box or fence post pick tail

176

00:09:16,958 --> 00:09:19,188

fence post for rotational grazing we've

177

00:09:19,389 --> 00:09:21,559

been wanting to actually rotationally

178

00:09:21,759 --> 00:09:24,289

graze our pasture forever and we're just

179

00:09:24,490 --> 00:09:25,519

now getting the equipment where it's

180

00:09:25,720 --> 00:09:29,129

actually feasible to do it

181

00:09:42,698 --> 00:09:44,459

well folks it's 5:30

182

00:09:44,659 --> 00:09:46,969

I didn't get done everything on my list

183

00:09:47,169 --> 00:09:49,618

actually I was hoping to rototiller the

184

00:09:49,818 --> 00:09:51,659

garden today but there was a lot of goat

185

00:09:51,860 --> 00:09:53,308

chasing you didn't see unfortunately I

186

00:09:53,509 --> 00:09:55,139

fixed that there was a hole in the fence

187

00:09:55,339 --> 00:09:57,238

basically where the buck was squeezing

188

00:09:57,438 --> 00:09:59,368

out through the fence and he got out I

189

00:09:59,568 --> 00:10:02,248

think four times he took one bite off a

190

00:10:02,448 --> 00:10:07,919

cherry tree buck this has been another

191

00:10:08,120 --> 00:10:11,188

great day on the homestead I'll see you

192

00:10:11,389 --> 00:10:12,839

in another video yeah just go go go

193

00:10:13,039 --> 00:10:15,299

around here sweet homestead sir yeah

194

00:10:15,500 --> 00:10:16,738

don't forget to get your home sweet home

195

00:10:16,938 --> 00:10:18,599

set sure it actually looks sharper than

196

00:10:18,799 --> 00:10:20,698

that because this in white now and that

197

00:10:20,899 --> 00:10:24,188

white just pops up all the colors

198

00:10:28,059 --> 00:10:33,059

00:00:05,269 --> 00:00:15,130

[Music]

2

00:00:15,330 --> 00:00:17,280

because burned

3

00:00:17,480 --> 00:00:20,600

[Music]

4

00:00:22,660 --> 00:00:25,769

[Music]

5

00:00:25,969 --> 00:00:28,440

I'm out with the boys in the garden all

6

00:00:28,640 --> 00:00:30,570

the boys little buddies behind you here

7

00:00:30,769 --> 00:00:33,719

we're gonna plant five raspberry plants

8

00:00:33,920 --> 00:00:36,750

I was out here prepping this area to put

9

00:00:36,950 --> 00:00:38,659

in the raspberries digging up the soil

10

00:00:38,859 --> 00:00:41,909

adding a bunch of this partially

11

00:00:42,109 --> 00:00:44,669

composted manure and I found this cool

12

00:00:44,869 --> 00:00:47,369

little elderberry plant here which I

13

00:00:47,570 --> 00:00:50,070

will keep and that came from actually

14

00:00:50,270 --> 00:00:51,839

just burying some chunks of elderberry

15

00:00:52,039 --> 00:00:54,029

root that I dug up from the world these

16

00:00:54,229 --> 00:00:57,769

raspberries came from the Indiana

17

00:00:57,969 --> 00:01:01,559

Berrien plant company these are a

18

00:01:01,759 --> 00:01:05,399

variety called Nantahala and if you're

19

00:01:05,599 --> 00:01:07,049

from around here you'll recognize the

20

00:01:07,250 --> 00:01:09,030

name immediately this variety was

21

00:01:09,230 --> 00:01:15,090

developed by NC State and I bought it

22

00:01:15,290 --> 00:01:17,700

because supposed to taste good and do

23

00:01:17,900 --> 00:01:20,590

well around here

24

00:01:26,019 --> 00:01:30,619

it's okay dude all right that's that

25

00:01:30,819 --> 00:01:35,628

look at these silly cows hey lady

26

00:01:35,828 --> 00:01:43,738

any babies it's been pretty rainy the

27

00:01:43,938 --> 00:01:45,628

past two days which has been nice for

28

00:01:45,828 --> 00:01:48,439

the garden and pasture and everything

29

00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:51,890

the cow has been out in the rain we

30

00:01:52,090 --> 00:01:53,878

would pretty much try to keep her

31

00:01:54,078 --> 00:01:57,599

outside and have generally been happier

32

00:01:57,799 --> 00:02:00,329

overall when we kept the cow that we had

33

00:02:00,530 --> 00:02:03,418

out of the barn she will stay so much

34

00:02:03,618 --> 00:02:07,918

cleaner out here then she will in the

35

00:02:08,118 --> 00:02:08,399

barn

36

00:02:08,598 --> 00:02:13,710

and not only will she stay cleaner which

37

00:02:13,909 --> 00:02:17,099

makes milking cleaning easier keeps your

38

00:02:17,299 --> 00:02:20,939

milk cleaner the barn stays a lot

39

00:02:21,139 --> 00:02:22,710

cleaner too so everything stays cleaner

40

00:02:22,909 --> 00:02:24,599

if she just stays out and and the rain

41

00:02:24,799 --> 00:02:26,910

doesn't hurt her you know if it's storm

42

00:02:27,110 --> 00:02:28,050

and real bad we might let her in the

43

00:02:28,250 --> 00:02:31,819

barn but if I turn my gaze over this way

44

00:02:32,019 --> 00:02:34,140

there's an apple tree that's doing great

45

00:02:34,340 --> 00:02:37,680

but right in here there are two ducks

46

00:02:37,879 --> 00:02:40,680

sitting on duck eggs

47

00:02:40,879 --> 00:02:44,098

[Music]

48

00:02:47,879 --> 00:02:51,049

[Music]

49

00:02:54,169 --> 00:02:57,800

our raspberries are in the ground one

50

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:01,950

two three four five and then between

51

00:03:02,150 --> 00:03:04,830

this post and that corner up there we'll

52

00:03:05,030 --> 00:03:07,618

put in 13 more plants and I think it's

53

00:03:07,818 --> 00:03:10,140

five different varieties the potatoes

54

00:03:10,340 --> 00:03:11,759

are doing awesome I've started just

55

00:03:11,959 --> 00:03:13,740

mulching them with grass that I cut by

56

00:03:13,939 --> 00:03:15,170

hand from around the edge of the garden

57

00:03:15,370 --> 00:03:18,890

this lettuce looks awesome but it needs

58

00:03:19,090 --> 00:03:20,640

thinning but it's just growing

59

00:03:20,840 --> 00:03:23,550

beautifully this is joyful garden she

60

00:03:23,750 --> 00:03:26,100

needs to do some work on it these peas

61

00:03:26,300 --> 00:03:28,850

along the fence are looking really puny

62

00:03:29,050 --> 00:03:31,950

so last night I cut the grass all along

63

00:03:32,150 --> 00:03:34,259

the fence to try to give him a little

64

00:03:34,459 --> 00:03:37,020

more sunlight and then I fertilized them

65

00:03:37,219 --> 00:03:40,200

this morning with some fish fertilizer

66

00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,780

to try to just get them to pop the

67

00:03:42,979 --> 00:03:45,060

asparagus is doing awesome and there's

68

00:03:45,259 --> 00:03:46,950

just a nice thick steak look at this

69

00:03:47,150 --> 00:03:49,770

giant here and then under the feet of

70

00:03:49,969 --> 00:03:53,550

the asparagus there are thousands of

71

00:03:53,750 --> 00:03:57,780

little asparagus plants here all along

72

00:03:57,979 --> 00:04:00,870

so if we let it this whole area here and

73

00:04:01,069 --> 00:04:01,530

here

74

00:04:01,729 --> 00:04:04,289

will turn into a big giant asparagus bed

75

00:04:04,489 --> 00:04:06,840

the rhubarb looks really great and

76

00:04:07,039 --> 00:04:09,450

there's comfrey coming up down here in

77

00:04:09,650 --> 00:04:12,960

the path the strawberry bed looks really

78

00:04:13,159 --> 00:04:15,719

really good and here are onions which

79

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,900

this was my last project is weeding and

80

00:04:19,100 --> 00:04:21,020

mulching this is gonna be my next one

81

00:04:21,220 --> 00:04:23,189

weeding the onions probably mulching

82

00:04:23,389 --> 00:04:25,439

them in some way and here's Chinese

83

00:04:25,639 --> 00:04:28,680

chives which are pretty tasty the garlic

84

00:04:28,879 --> 00:04:33,000

looks good but needs weeding kale the

85

00:04:33,199 --> 00:04:38,670

same beets the same spinach looks pretty

86

00:04:38,870 --> 00:04:43,949

good that is they think radishes green

87

00:04:44,149 --> 00:04:45,689

onions the kids are constantly eating

88

00:04:45,889 --> 00:04:47,278

these you can see all these tops pulled

89

00:04:47,478 --> 00:04:49,939

off that's from children eating them and

90

00:04:50,139 --> 00:04:52,920

then if some radishes in here that one

91

00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:54,689

actually it's a nice little radish in

92

00:04:54,889 --> 00:04:58,139

there let's pull that up oh what a

93

00:04:58,339 --> 00:05:00,300

pretty little radish we'll bring that

94

00:05:00,500 --> 00:05:04,680

inside probably more and then cilantro

95

00:05:04,879 --> 00:05:06,280

beautifully green

96

00:05:06,480 --> 00:05:11,680

growing starting here we have herbs dill

97

00:05:11,879 --> 00:05:14,139

plants here and then lots of little dill

98

00:05:14,339 --> 00:05:16,960

coming up chives bunching onions here

99

00:05:17,160 --> 00:05:19,600

just coming up after much delay

100

00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:26,020

you know oregano thyme sage tarragon I'm

101

00:05:26,220 --> 00:05:29,850

pretty sure I'll show you how our

102

00:05:30,050 --> 00:05:32,050

cabbage is doing in this tunnel it's

103

00:05:32,250 --> 00:05:34,329

doing awesome and it is not being eaten

104

00:05:34,529 --> 00:05:37,030

by caterpillars at least I saw a little

105

00:05:37,230 --> 00:05:42,370

slug damage on one of them look at this

106

00:05:42,569 --> 00:05:46,150

a lot of weeds but the plants look

107

00:05:46,350 --> 00:05:47,980

awesome and then you're getting they're

108

00:05:48,180 --> 00:05:50,079

big and they're strong really pretty

109

00:05:50,279 --> 00:05:53,410

little plants there this portion of the

110

00:05:53,610 --> 00:05:55,120

garden behind me is almost completely

111

00:05:55,319 --> 00:05:56,680

planted there's a little open real

112

00:05:56,879 --> 00:05:59,079

estate here down at the end there and

113

00:05:59,279 --> 00:06:01,840

then in the ends of those beds but our

114

00:06:02,040 --> 00:06:04,660

early gardens almost totally in next

115

00:06:04,860 --> 00:06:08,860

comes this mess up here this part of the

116

00:06:09,060 --> 00:06:11,770

garden as far as the soil goes is pretty

117

00:06:11,970 --> 00:06:13,449

significantly worse than what's behind

118

00:06:13,649 --> 00:06:16,540

me down here we've put a ton actually

119

00:06:16,740 --> 00:06:19,139

multiple tons honestly literally of

120

00:06:19,339 --> 00:06:23,050

organic manure compost into this lower

121

00:06:23,250 --> 00:06:25,210

portion and just not as much into the

122

00:06:25,410 --> 00:06:27,639

upper portion so we're gonna row to till

123

00:06:27,839 --> 00:06:30,069

this upper portion so that's what's next

124

00:06:30,269 --> 00:06:31,240

in the garden and that's pretty much

125

00:06:31,439 --> 00:06:33,189

wraps up our garden tour let's go see

126

00:06:33,389 --> 00:06:34,730

some baby goats

127

00:06:34,930 --> 00:06:38,050

[Music]

128

00:06:38,250 --> 00:06:41,088

so far this is the most vigorous of all

129

00:06:41,288 --> 00:06:44,480

the apple trees and it's a Liberty all

130

00:06:44,680 --> 00:06:46,759

of these trees are putting on a good

131

00:06:46,959 --> 00:06:52,910

amount of new growth this is a straight

132

00:06:53,110 --> 00:06:56,990

start break star and we're gonna have to

133

00:06:57,189 --> 00:06:59,199

pick these off here but this thing has

134

00:06:59,399 --> 00:07:02,240

probably twenty or thirty little tiny

135

00:07:02,439 --> 00:07:05,778

though apples on yeah that's just a

136

00:07:05,978 --> 00:07:10,550

second year in the ground tree I got

137

00:07:10,750 --> 00:07:15,860

some hay for you do you want it there's

138

00:07:16,060 --> 00:07:18,139

a few stray chickens but we'll let the

139

00:07:18,339 --> 00:07:21,538

majority of these chickens

140

00:07:28,709 --> 00:07:30,579

how are you all doing we all do it

141

00:07:30,779 --> 00:07:32,730

hanging out here is beautiful outside

142

00:07:32,930 --> 00:07:35,790

144

00:07:39,538 --> 00:07:42,968

in the world are you patting that goat

145

00:07:43,168 --> 00:07:45,999

146

00:07:46,199 --> 00:07:48,860

far you're trying to come in here go

149

00:08:07,079 --> 00:08:16,870

play if I couldn't interest you in some

150

00:08:17,069 --> 00:08:18,999

hey maybe I could interested interest

151

00:08:19,199 --> 00:08:26,528

you in some fly spray ma'am I think

152

00:08:26,728 --> 00:08:28,778

that's why she's making that little bit

153

00:08:28,978 --> 00:08:31,468

of a bellowing film so bad this year

154

00:08:31,668 --> 00:08:33,669

well she doesn't like it so she's

155

00:08:33,870 --> 00:08:37,059

running from me what count does like

156

00:08:37,259 --> 00:08:39,699

being straight dolly never liked fly

157

00:08:39,899 --> 00:08:42,819

spray I did get thumb on her just now so

158

00:08:43,019 --> 00:08:43,929

hopefully that will help her be more

159

00:08:44,129 --> 00:08:46,639

comfortable

160

00:08:56,379 --> 00:08:58,709

well that's gonna about wrap it up for

161

00:08:58,909 --> 00:09:02,519

[Music]

2

00:00:15,330 --> 00:00:17,280

because burned

3

00:00:17,480 --> 00:00:20,600

[Music]

4

00:00:22,660 --> 00:00:25,769

[Music]

5

00:00:25,969 --> 00:00:28,440

I'm out with the boys in the garden all

6

00:00:28,640 --> 00:00:30,570

the boys little buddies behind you here

7

00:00:30,769 --> 00:00:33,719

we're gonna plant five raspberry plants

8

00:00:33,920 --> 00:00:36,750

I was out here prepping this area to put

9

00:00:36,950 --> 00:00:38,659

in the raspberries digging up the soil

10

00:00:38,859 --> 00:00:41,909

adding a bunch of this partially

11

00:00:42,109 --> 00:00:44,669

composted manure and I found this cool

12

00:00:44,869 --> 00:00:47,369

little elderberry plant here which I

13

00:00:47,570 --> 00:00:50,070

will keep and that came from actually

14

00:00:50,270 --> 00:00:51,839

just burying some chunks of elderberry

15

00:00:52,039 --> 00:00:54,029

root that I dug up from the world these

16

00:00:54,229 --> 00:00:57,769

raspberries came from the Indiana

17

00:00:57,969 --> 00:01:01,559

Berrien plant company these are a

18

00:01:01,759 --> 00:01:05,399

variety called Nantahala and if you're

19

00:01:05,599 --> 00:01:07,049

from around here you'll recognize the

20

00:01:07,250 --> 00:01:09,030

name immediately this variety was

21

00:01:09,230 --> 00:01:15,090

developed by NC State and I bought it

22

00:01:15,290 --> 00:01:17,700

because supposed to taste good and do

23

00:01:17,900 --> 00:01:20,590

well around here

24

00:01:26,019 --> 00:01:30,619

it's okay dude all right that's that

25

00:01:30,819 --> 00:01:35,628

look at these silly cows hey lady

26

00:01:35,828 --> 00:01:43,738

any babies it's been pretty rainy the

27

00:01:43,938 --> 00:01:45,628

past two days which has been nice for

28

00:01:45,828 --> 00:01:48,439

the garden and pasture and everything

29

00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:51,890

the cow has been out in the rain we

30

00:01:52,090 --> 00:01:53,878

would pretty much try to keep her

31

00:01:54,078 --> 00:01:57,599

outside and have generally been happier

32

00:01:57,799 --> 00:02:00,329

overall when we kept the cow that we had

33

00:02:00,530 --> 00:02:03,418

out of the barn she will stay so much

34

00:02:03,618 --> 00:02:07,918

cleaner out here then she will in the

35

00:02:08,118 --> 00:02:08,399

barn

36

00:02:08,598 --> 00:02:13,710

and not only will she stay cleaner which

37

00:02:13,909 --> 00:02:17,099

makes milking cleaning easier keeps your

38

00:02:17,299 --> 00:02:20,939

milk cleaner the barn stays a lot

39

00:02:21,139 --> 00:02:22,710

cleaner too so everything stays cleaner

40

00:02:22,909 --> 00:02:24,599

if she just stays out and and the rain

41

00:02:24,799 --> 00:02:26,910

doesn't hurt her you know if it's storm

42

00:02:27,110 --> 00:02:28,050

and real bad we might let her in the

43

00:02:28,250 --> 00:02:31,819

barn but if I turn my gaze over this way

44

00:02:32,019 --> 00:02:34,140

there's an apple tree that's doing great

45

00:02:34,340 --> 00:02:37,680

but right in here there are two ducks

46

00:02:37,879 --> 00:02:40,680

sitting on duck eggs

47

00:02:40,879 --> 00:02:44,098

[Music]

48

00:02:47,879 --> 00:02:51,049

[Music]

49

00:02:54,169 --> 00:02:57,800

our raspberries are in the ground one

50

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:01,950

two three four five and then between

51

00:03:02,150 --> 00:03:04,830

this post and that corner up there we'll

52

00:03:05,030 --> 00:03:07,618

put in 13 more plants and I think it's

53

00:03:07,818 --> 00:03:10,140

five different varieties the potatoes

54

00:03:10,340 --> 00:03:11,759

are doing awesome I've started just

55

00:03:11,959 --> 00:03:13,740

mulching them with grass that I cut by

56

00:03:13,939 --> 00:03:15,170

hand from around the edge of the garden

57

00:03:15,370 --> 00:03:18,890

this lettuce looks awesome but it needs

58

00:03:19,090 --> 00:03:20,640

thinning but it's just growing

59

00:03:20,840 --> 00:03:23,550

beautifully this is joyful garden she

60

00:03:23,750 --> 00:03:26,100

needs to do some work on it these peas

61

00:03:26,300 --> 00:03:28,850

along the fence are looking really puny

62

00:03:29,050 --> 00:03:31,950

so last night I cut the grass all along

63

00:03:32,150 --> 00:03:34,259

the fence to try to give him a little

64

00:03:34,459 --> 00:03:37,020

more sunlight and then I fertilized them

65

00:03:37,219 --> 00:03:40,200

this morning with some fish fertilizer

66

00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,780

to try to just get them to pop the

67

00:03:42,979 --> 00:03:45,060

asparagus is doing awesome and there's

68

00:03:45,259 --> 00:03:46,950

just a nice thick steak look at this

69

00:03:47,150 --> 00:03:49,770

giant here and then under the feet of

70

00:03:49,969 --> 00:03:53,550

the asparagus there are thousands of

71

00:03:53,750 --> 00:03:57,780

little asparagus plants here all along

72

00:03:57,979 --> 00:04:00,870

so if we let it this whole area here and

73

00:04:01,069 --> 00:04:01,530

here

74

00:04:01,729 --> 00:04:04,289

will turn into a big giant asparagus bed

75

00:04:04,489 --> 00:04:06,840

the rhubarb looks really great and

76

00:04:07,039 --> 00:04:09,450

there's comfrey coming up down here in

77

00:04:09,650 --> 00:04:12,960

the path the strawberry bed looks really

78

00:04:13,159 --> 00:04:15,719

really good and here are onions which

79

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,900

this was my last project is weeding and

80

00:04:19,100 --> 00:04:21,020

mulching this is gonna be my next one

81

00:04:21,220 --> 00:04:23,189

weeding the onions probably mulching

82

00:04:23,389 --> 00:04:25,439

them in some way and here's Chinese

83

00:04:25,639 --> 00:04:28,680

chives which are pretty tasty the garlic

84

00:04:28,879 --> 00:04:33,000

looks good but needs weeding kale the

85

00:04:33,199 --> 00:04:38,670

same beets the same spinach looks pretty

86

00:04:38,870 --> 00:04:43,949

good that is they think radishes green

87

00:04:44,149 --> 00:04:45,689

onions the kids are constantly eating

88

00:04:45,889 --> 00:04:47,278

these you can see all these tops pulled

89

00:04:47,478 --> 00:04:49,939

off that's from children eating them and

90

00:04:50,139 --> 00:04:52,920

then if some radishes in here that one

91

00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:54,689

actually it's a nice little radish in

92

00:04:54,889 --> 00:04:58,139

there let's pull that up oh what a

93

00:04:58,339 --> 00:05:00,300

pretty little radish we'll bring that

94

00:05:00,500 --> 00:05:04,680

inside probably more and then cilantro

95

00:05:04,879 --> 00:05:06,280

beautifully green

96

00:05:06,480 --> 00:05:11,680

growing starting here we have herbs dill

97

00:05:11,879 --> 00:05:14,139

plants here and then lots of little dill

98

00:05:14,339 --> 00:05:16,960

coming up chives bunching onions here

99

00:05:17,160 --> 00:05:19,600

just coming up after much delay

100

00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:26,020

you know oregano thyme sage tarragon I'm

101

00:05:26,220 --> 00:05:29,850

pretty sure I'll show you how our

102

00:05:30,050 --> 00:05:32,050

cabbage is doing in this tunnel it's

103

00:05:32,250 --> 00:05:34,329

doing awesome and it is not being eaten

104

00:05:34,529 --> 00:05:37,030

by caterpillars at least I saw a little

105

00:05:37,230 --> 00:05:42,370

slug damage on one of them look at this

106

00:05:42,569 --> 00:05:46,150

a lot of weeds but the plants look

107

00:05:46,350 --> 00:05:47,980

awesome and then you're getting they're

108

00:05:48,180 --> 00:05:50,079

big and they're strong really pretty

109

00:05:50,279 --> 00:05:53,410

little plants there this portion of the

110

00:05:53,610 --> 00:05:55,120

garden behind me is almost completely

111

00:05:55,319 --> 00:05:56,680

planted there's a little open real

112

00:05:56,879 --> 00:05:59,079

estate here down at the end there and

113

00:05:59,279 --> 00:06:01,840

then in the ends of those beds but our

114

00:06:02,040 --> 00:06:04,660

early gardens almost totally in next

115

00:06:04,860 --> 00:06:08,860

comes this mess up here this part of the

116

00:06:09,060 --> 00:06:11,770

garden as far as the soil goes is pretty

117

00:06:11,970 --> 00:06:13,449

significantly worse than what's behind

118

00:06:13,649 --> 00:06:16,540

me down here we've put a ton actually

119

00:06:16,740 --> 00:06:19,139

multiple tons honestly literally of

120

00:06:19,339 --> 00:06:23,050

organic manure compost into this lower

121

00:06:23,250 --> 00:06:25,210

portion and just not as much into the

122

00:06:25,410 --> 00:06:27,639

upper portion so we're gonna row to till

123

00:06:27,839 --> 00:06:30,069

this upper portion so that's what's next

124

00:06:30,269 --> 00:06:31,240

in the garden and that's pretty much

125

00:06:31,439 --> 00:06:33,189

wraps up our garden tour let's go see

126

00:06:33,389 --> 00:06:34,730

some baby goats

127

00:06:34,930 --> 00:06:38,050

[Music]

128

00:06:38,250 --> 00:06:41,088

so far this is the most vigorous of all

129

00:06:41,288 --> 00:06:44,480

the apple trees and it's a Liberty all

130

00:06:44,680 --> 00:06:46,759

of these trees are putting on a good

131

00:06:46,959 --> 00:06:52,910

amount of new growth this is a straight

132

00:06:53,110 --> 00:06:56,990

start break star and we're gonna have to

133

00:06:57,189 --> 00:06:59,199

pick these off here but this thing has

134

00:06:59,399 --> 00:07:02,240

probably twenty or thirty little tiny

135

00:07:02,439 --> 00:07:05,778

though apples on yeah that's just a

136

00:07:05,978 --> 00:07:10,550

second year in the ground tree I got

137

00:07:10,750 --> 00:07:15,860

some hay for you do you want it there's

138

00:07:16,060 --> 00:07:18,139

a few stray chickens but we'll let the

139

00:07:18,339 --> 00:07:21,538

majority of these chickens

140

00:07:28,709 --> 00:07:30,579

how are you all doing we all do it

141

00:07:30,779 --> 00:07:32,730

hanging out here is beautiful outside

142

00:07:32,930 --> 00:07:35,790

what hang you that one here silly

143

00:07:35,990 --> 00:07:39,338

here's a little lucky the cutest Scout

144

00:07:39,538 --> 00:07:42,968

in the world are you patting that goat

145

00:07:43,168 --> 00:07:45,999

are you petting the goat that's so sweet

146

00:07:46,199 --> 00:07:48,860

back there

147

00:07:50,180 --> 00:08:02,949

do you love that goat Wilder sweet very

148

00:08:03,149 --> 00:08:06,879

far you're trying to come in here go

149

00:08:07,079 --> 00:08:16,870

play if I couldn't interest you in some

150

00:08:17,069 --> 00:08:18,999

hey maybe I could interested interest

151

00:08:19,199 --> 00:08:26,528

you in some fly spray ma'am I think

152

00:08:26,728 --> 00:08:28,778

that's why she's making that little bit

153

00:08:28,978 --> 00:08:31,468

of a bellowing film so bad this year

154

00:08:31,668 --> 00:08:33,669

well she doesn't like it so she's

155

00:08:33,870 --> 00:08:37,059

running from me what count does like

156

00:08:37,259 --> 00:08:39,699

being straight dolly never liked fly

157

00:08:39,899 --> 00:08:42,819

spray I did get thumb on her just now so

158

00:08:43,019 --> 00:08:43,929

hopefully that will help her be more

159

00:08:44,129 --> 00:08:46,639

comfortable

160

00:08:56,379 --> 00:08:58,709

well that's gonna about wrap it up for

Here's the one Homestead job that I really dislike. Also, come along for all the work I do today on the family farm.

Transcript:

1

00:00:00,030 --> 00:00:01,600

good morning everybody today for this

2

00:00:01,800 --> 00:00:03,579

video I'm gonna just show you everything

3

00:00:03,779 --> 00:00:06,809

I do today that is homestead work

4

00:00:07,009 --> 00:00:17,919

starting now the boys are fertilizing

5

00:00:18,118 --> 00:00:20,409

these greens with fish fertilizer and

6

00:00:20,609 --> 00:00:22,210

they're just pouring it down each line

7

00:00:22,410 --> 00:00:24,159

with a pretty concentrated fish

8

00:00:24,359 --> 00:00:26,169

fertilizer and then we'll water this bed

9

00:00:26,368 --> 00:00:30,589

when we're done pull out those plants

10

00:00:31,989 --> 00:00:52,498

[Music]

11

00:00:52,698 --> 00:00:54,779

as much as possible it's planning dirt

12

00:00:54,979 --> 00:00:57,669

not in the newer

13

00:00:57,869 --> 00:01:00,498

and then just make sure that if you have

14

00:01:00,698 --> 00:01:01,849

locked the brakes make sure they get to

15

00:01:02,049 --> 00:01:03,419

spread out

16

00:01:03,619 --> 00:01:06,119

is that we want oil around them as much

17

00:01:06,319 --> 00:01:10,019

as all the raspberries are in and two

18

00:01:10,219 --> 00:01:12,750

other berry plants raspberries elder

19

00:01:12,950 --> 00:01:14,369

various at the bottom justice is

20

00:01:14,569 --> 00:01:15,689

watering them and then it's breakfast

21

00:01:15,890 --> 00:01:17,429

time you got the dirt baby and we're

22

00:01:17,629 --> 00:01:19,528

gonna go eat breakfast we're dirt baby

23

00:01:19,728 --> 00:01:21,450

we're checking the cow for subclinical

24

00:01:21,650 --> 00:01:24,689

mastitis so I've got these four jars to

25

00:01:24,890 --> 00:01:27,569

take samples from four quarters to the

26

00:01:27,769 --> 00:01:30,750

barn to milk after chasing a goat that

27

00:01:30,950 --> 00:01:45,079

was out here's my right back left back

28

00:01:45,280 --> 00:01:52,558

her left front and her right front now

29

00:01:52,759 --> 00:01:53,969

we'll just finish smoking out her

30

00:01:54,170 --> 00:01:54,939

backside

31

00:01:55,140 --> 00:02:03,540

[Music]

32

00:02:17,360 --> 00:02:25,810

[Music]

33

00:02:29,889 --> 00:02:46,920

more raspberry plants came in to mail we

34

00:02:47,120 --> 00:02:50,300

have four Triple Crowns blackberries

35

00:02:50,500 --> 00:02:55,140

three black Jim blackberries I can't

36

00:02:55,340 --> 00:02:57,989

pronounce these we watch cheetah

37

00:02:58,188 --> 00:03:02,969

blackberries six double gold raspberries

38

00:03:03,169 --> 00:03:07,230

and four characters these plants we will

39

00:03:07,430 --> 00:03:08,700

not be planting today they have to be

40

00:03:08,900 --> 00:03:10,980

hardened off which means introduced

41

00:03:11,180 --> 00:03:12,509

slowly to direct sunlight they've

42

00:03:12,709 --> 00:03:14,129

probably been grown in a greenhouse or

43

00:03:14,329 --> 00:03:16,289

under State cloth and you can kill them

44

00:03:16,489 --> 00:03:17,310

if you just put them straight out in the

45

00:03:17,509 --> 00:03:19,050

Sun so we'll let them get about two or

46

00:03:19,250 --> 00:03:21,269

three hours of Sun today and each day

47

00:03:21,468 --> 00:03:24,118

for the next couple days and then we'll

48

00:03:24,318 --> 00:03:25,980

plan them out next it's time for a quick

49

00:03:26,180 --> 00:03:27,989

herbal orientation for this guy who

50

00:03:28,188 --> 00:03:30,330

might be sent to run herb errands for

51

00:03:30,530 --> 00:03:33,149

cooking so you know green onions right

52

00:03:33,348 --> 00:03:36,659

pay attention now okay ready cilantro

53

00:03:36,859 --> 00:03:38,789

this one's dill if she wants to do

54

00:03:38,989 --> 00:03:40,368

that's what she wants this is chives

55

00:03:40,568 --> 00:03:42,539

it's kind of like onions but it's like

56

00:03:42,739 --> 00:03:45,929

tiny in this oregano this is called

57

00:03:46,128 --> 00:03:49,890

oregano this is called time this one is

58

00:03:50,090 --> 00:03:54,439

called sage this one is summer savory

59

00:03:54,639 --> 00:03:56,939

she wanted oregano when we send you out

60

00:03:57,139 --> 00:03:59,759

to get herbs take scissors and just clip

61

00:03:59,959 --> 00:04:01,020

off little pieces like that

62

00:04:01,219 --> 00:04:08,279

okay we're using this portable somatic

63

00:04:08,479 --> 00:04:11,129

cell count kit to detect subclinical

64

00:04:11,329 --> 00:04:12,779

mastitis now I didn't tell you why we're

65

00:04:12,979 --> 00:04:15,719

doing this we're doing this because when

66

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,718

we got Alice the milk cow her milk at

67

00:04:18,918 --> 00:04:22,110

least from back quarters tasted salty

68

00:04:22,310 --> 00:04:24,600

salty tasting milk can be a sign of

69

00:04:24,800 --> 00:04:26,699

mastitis we've also been reading about

70

00:04:26,899 --> 00:04:29,040

it and there's a lot of other possible

71

00:04:29,240 --> 00:04:30,449

reasons there's actually a ton of people

72

00:04:30,649 --> 00:04:33,019

right now on all the online cow boards

73

00:04:33,218 --> 00:04:35,189

posting about their salty tasting milk

74

00:04:35,389 --> 00:04:37,110

we're gonna do this test though this may

75

00:04:37,310 --> 00:04:39,809

help us know if she actually

76

00:04:40,009 --> 00:04:41,910

besides the concern would be that she

77

00:04:42,110 --> 00:04:43,588

might be like in an early stage of

78

00:04:43,788 --> 00:04:47,100

mastitis she actually her milk looks

79

00:04:47,300 --> 00:04:50,519

great and her udder looks fine so a lot

80

00:04:50,718 --> 00:04:53,429

is reassuring and we're gonna refer back

81

00:04:53,629 --> 00:04:55,709

to our instructions that Wilders eating

82

00:04:55,908 --> 00:04:59,968

four drops in milk okay we're okay no we

83

00:05:00,168 --> 00:05:02,549

only need four drops of milk on each one

84

00:05:02,749 --> 00:05:07,169

of these three four we're gonna rinse

85

00:05:07,369 --> 00:05:09,629

that out and then four drops of

86

00:05:09,829 --> 00:05:13,829

developer on each trip we've got to wait

87

00:05:14,028 --> 00:05:15,359

five minutes so while we're waiting I'm

88

00:05:15,559 --> 00:05:17,489

gonna taste all these milks I'm just

89

00:05:17,689 --> 00:05:31,170

tasting the left-back salty you're right

90

00:05:31,370 --> 00:05:34,538

back tastes really good to me

91

00:05:34,749 --> 00:05:37,649

right front tastes good left front

92

00:05:37,848 --> 00:05:38,879

tastes good they all taste good at the

93

00:05:39,079 --> 00:05:40,439

left back though tastes bad here's the

94

00:05:40,639 --> 00:05:43,139

test results left front is white right

95

00:05:43,338 --> 00:05:47,218

front right back and then here is the

96

00:05:47,418 --> 00:05:49,679

left back and what we're supposed to do

97

00:05:49,879 --> 00:05:52,649

is compare the color to this test strip

98

00:05:52,848 --> 00:05:54,569

honestly it's closest to this one which

99

00:05:54,769 --> 00:06:02,639

is 1500 cells times a thousand from Noli

100

00:06:02,838 --> 00:06:04,379

so it looks like she may have mastitis

101

00:06:04,579 --> 00:06:06,899

in her left back quarter this too this

102

00:06:07,098 --> 00:06:08,670

isn't a definitive diagnostic test

103

00:06:08,870 --> 00:06:10,468

format size but it looks like she

104

00:06:10,668 --> 00:06:14,189

probably does so we have some learning

105

00:06:14,389 --> 00:06:16,528

to do about treating mastitis we're

106

00:06:16,728 --> 00:06:18,059

doing everything right now we're milking

107

00:06:18,259 --> 00:06:19,920

her out in that back left quarter

108

00:06:20,120 --> 00:06:22,559

especially and her milk actually looks

109

00:06:22,759 --> 00:06:24,329

good it's not really it's not chunky or

110

00:06:24,528 --> 00:06:27,430

gloppy or anything

111

00:06:29,060 --> 00:06:31,960

this is by far my least favorite thing

112

00:06:32,160 --> 00:06:34,360

that we do around here I'm gonna dis bud

113

00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:37,449

all the goats there's a lot of reasons

114

00:06:37,649 --> 00:06:41,430

we do this I do think that it's not

115

00:06:41,629 --> 00:06:43,509

necessary if you're planning on keeping

116

00:06:43,709 --> 00:06:46,420

a goat but most people buying goats

117

00:06:46,620 --> 00:06:49,540

expect it and it would be a big turn-off

118

00:06:49,740 --> 00:06:52,000

to many people but we're going to knock

119

00:06:52,199 --> 00:06:53,590

it out really quick and let these babies

120

00:06:53,790 --> 00:06:57,830

go back to their mum

121

00:07:01,589 --> 00:07:03,559

all right you're done let's get you back

122

00:07:03,759 --> 00:07:07,520

to mommy now it's lucky to Luckys turn

123

00:07:07,720 --> 00:07:09,910

poor little lady sorry girl

124

00:07:10,110 --> 00:07:12,910

and that was Molly's turn sorry lady

125

00:07:13,110 --> 00:07:18,079

alright she's done these babies they're

126

00:07:18,279 --> 00:07:19,278

not gonna probably let me get close

127

00:07:19,478 --> 00:07:21,468

they're gonna say we remember what you

128

00:07:21,668 --> 00:07:23,960

just did to us hey guys

129

00:07:24,160 --> 00:07:28,929

a little burnt heads you guys are cute

130

00:07:29,129 --> 00:07:31,939

and that should be the lastest Budig I

131

00:07:32,139 --> 00:07:35,689

have to do this year she that calf is

132

00:07:35,889 --> 00:07:37,850

polled and we don't have a name for yet

133

00:07:38,050 --> 00:07:40,338

that calf and this guy you can see his

134

00:07:40,538 --> 00:07:42,290

horns I'm gonna let his horns grow

135

00:07:42,490 --> 00:07:44,959

though I'll tell you why because he's

136

00:07:45,158 --> 00:07:46,730

gonna be beefed within a year he's a

137

00:07:46,930 --> 00:07:48,350

good size two month old calf he's gonna

138

00:07:48,550 --> 00:07:50,540

be beefed within a year we're not we

139

00:07:50,740 --> 00:07:53,149

don't have to sell him yeah I just don't

140

00:07:53,348 --> 00:07:54,588

think it's gonna be a problem so he'll

141

00:07:54,788 --> 00:07:56,329

have some little horns by the time we

142

00:07:56,528 --> 00:07:57,739

eat but Sherman you can probably hear

143

00:07:57,939 --> 00:07:59,359

Breanna is mowing down here and you

144

00:07:59,559 --> 00:08:00,739

might say why aren't you mowing you're

145

00:08:00,939 --> 00:08:03,439

the man between us that's the more

146

00:08:03,639 --> 00:08:05,838

favorable job rather than we're doing

147

00:08:06,038 --> 00:08:07,910

work with this guy in your back I love

148

00:08:08,110 --> 00:08:09,829

wearing this guy but it just makes it

149

00:08:10,028 --> 00:08:12,619

hard to do work and so that is the job

150

00:08:12,819 --> 00:08:14,509

that both of us wanted she's doing it

151

00:08:14,709 --> 00:08:17,749

last time she mowed was the day that he

152

00:08:17,949 --> 00:08:21,079

was born I'm gonna link that video right

153

00:08:21,278 --> 00:08:23,809

up here I never get it right I'm gonna

154

00:08:24,009 --> 00:08:26,239

link that video right up here check it

155

00:08:26,439 --> 00:08:27,980

out it's actually hilarious if you

156

00:08:28,180 --> 00:08:29,689

haven't seen it check it out next I'm

157

00:08:29,889 --> 00:08:32,120

gonna burn this area I've burnt it

158

00:08:32,320 --> 00:08:33,468

before this is where our blueberries are

159

00:08:33,668 --> 00:08:35,269

going I want this grass to be dead so we

160

00:08:35,469 --> 00:08:36,828

can mulch and not have the grass come up

161

00:08:37,028 --> 00:08:39,588

through the mulch oh by the way guys our

162

00:08:39,788 --> 00:08:40,669

t-shirt

163

00:08:40,870 --> 00:08:43,218

Home Sweet Home stead is very popular

164

00:08:43,418 --> 00:08:46,099

t-shirt a ton of y'all loved it is for

165

00:08:46,299 --> 00:08:48,679

sale again the design color this time is

166

00:08:48,879 --> 00:08:51,198

white and there's a lot more choices of

167

00:08:51,399 --> 00:08:52,490

t-shirt colors there's some really cool

168

00:08:52,690 --> 00:08:54,159

ones I've got some coming in the mail

169

00:08:54,360 --> 00:08:57,498

here's a picture of the shirt check it

170

00:08:57,698 --> 00:09:00,318

out links below the video all right done

171

00:09:00,519 --> 00:09:03,289

with that that was fun but I ran out of

172

00:09:03,490 --> 00:09:06,229

camera battery I've carefully burned

173

00:09:06,429 --> 00:09:08,179

around my apple trees not right next to

174

00:09:08,379 --> 00:09:13,688

him hey how's mowing going good Wow

175

00:09:13,889 --> 00:09:16,758

inside this box or fence post pick tail

176

00:09:16,958 --> 00:09:19,188

fence post for rotational grazing we've

177

00:09:19,389 --> 00:09:21,559

been wanting to actually rotationally

178

00:09:21,759 --> 00:09:24,289

graze our pasture forever and we're just

179

00:09:24,490 --> 00:09:25,519

now getting the equipment where it's

180

00:09:25,720 --> 00:09:29,129

actually feasible to do it

181

00:09:42,698 --> 00:09:44,459

well folks it's 5:30

182

00:09:44,659 --> 00:09:46,969

I didn't get done everything on my list

183

00:09:47,169 --> 00:09:49,618

actually I was hoping to rototiller the

184

00:09:49,818 --> 00:09:51,659

garden today but there was a lot of goat

185

00:09:51,860 --> 00:09:53,308

chasing you didn't see unfortunately I

186

00:09:53,509 --> 00:09:55,139

fixed that there was a hole in the fence

187

00:09:55,339 --> 00:09:57,238

basically where the buck was squeezing

188

00:09:57,438 --> 00:09:59,368

out through the fence and he got out I

189

00:09:59,568 --> 00:10:02,248

think four times he took one bite off a

190

00:10:02,448 --> 00:10:07,919

cherry tree buck this has been another

191

00:10:08,120 --> 00:10:11,188

great day on the homestead I'll see you

192

00:10:11,389 --> 00:10:12,839

in another video yeah just go go go

193

00:10:13,039 --> 00:10:15,299

around here sweet homestead sir yeah

194

00:10:15,500 --> 00:10:16,738

don't forget to get your home sweet home

195

00:10:16,938 --> 00:10:18,599

set sure it actually looks sharper than

196

00:10:18,799 --> 00:10:20,698

that because this in white now and that

197

00:10:20,899 --> 00:10:24,188

white just pops up all the colors

198

00:10:28,059 --> 00:10:33,059

1

00:00:00,030 --> 00:00:01,600

good morning everybody today for this

2

00:00:01,800 --> 00:00:03,579

video I'm gonna just show you everything

3

00:00:03,779 --> 00:00:06,809

I do today that is homestead work

4

00:00:07,009 --> 00:00:17,919

starting now the boys are fertilizing

5

00:00:18,118 --> 00:00:20,409

these greens with fish fertilizer and

6

00:00:20,609 --> 00:00:22,210

they're just pouring it down each line

7

00:00:22,410 --> 00:00:24,159

with a pretty concentrated fish

8

00:00:24,359 --> 00:00:26,169

fertilizer and then we'll water this bed

9

00:00:26,368 --> 00:00:30,589

when we're done pull out those plants

10

00:00:31,989 --> 00:00:52,498

[Music]

11

00:00:52,698 --> 00:00:54,779

as much as possible it's planning dirt

12

00:00:54,979 --> 00:00:57,669

not in the newer

13

00:00:57,869 --> 00:01:00,498

and then just make sure that if you have

14

00:01:00,698 --> 00:01:01,849

locked the brakes make sure they get to

15

00:01:02,049 --> 00:01:03,419

spread out

16

00:01:03,619 --> 00:01:06,119

is that we want oil around them as much

17

00:01:06,319 --> 00:01:10,019

as all the raspberries are in and two

18

00:01:10,219 --> 00:01:12,750

other berry plants raspberries elder

19

00:01:12,950 --> 00:01:14,369

various at the bottom justice is

20

00:01:14,569 --> 00:01:15,689

watering them and then it's breakfast

21

00:01:15,890 --> 00:01:17,429

time you got the dirt baby and we're

22

00:01:17,629 --> 00:01:19,528

gonna go eat breakfast we're dirt baby

23

00:01:19,728 --> 00:01:21,450

we're checking the cow for subclinical

24

00:01:21,650 --> 00:01:24,689

mastitis so I've got these four jars to

25

00:01:24,890 --> 00:01:27,569

take samples from four quarters to the

26

00:01:27,769 --> 00:01:30,750

barn to milk after chasing a goat that

27

00:01:30,950 --> 00:01:45,079

was out here's my right back left back

28

00:01:45,280 --> 00:01:52,558

her left front and her right front now

29

00:01:52,759 --> 00:01:53,969

we'll just finish smoking out her

30

00:01:54,170 --> 00:01:54,939

backside

31

00:01:55,140 --> 00:02:03,540

[Music]

32

00:02:17,360 --> 00:02:25,810

[Music]

33

00:02:29,889 --> 00:02:46,920

more raspberry plants came in to mail we

34

00:02:47,120 --> 00:02:50,300

have four Triple Crowns blackberries

35

00:02:50,500 --> 00:02:55,140

three black Jim blackberries I can't

36

00:02:55,340 --> 00:02:57,989

pronounce these we watch cheetah

37

00:02:58,188 --> 00:03:02,969

blackberries six double gold raspberries

38

00:03:03,169 --> 00:03:07,230

and four characters these plants we will

39

00:03:07,430 --> 00:03:08,700

not be planting today they have to be

40

00:03:08,900 --> 00:03:10,980

hardened off which means introduced

41

00:03:11,180 --> 00:03:12,509

slowly to direct sunlight they've

42

00:03:12,709 --> 00:03:14,129

probably been grown in a greenhouse or

43

00:03:14,329 --> 00:03:16,289

under State cloth and you can kill them

44

00:03:16,489 --> 00:03:17,310

if you just put them straight out in the

45

00:03:17,509 --> 00:03:19,050

Sun so we'll let them get about two or

46

00:03:19,250 --> 00:03:21,269

three hours of Sun today and each day

47

00:03:21,468 --> 00:03:24,118

for the next couple days and then we'll

48

00:03:24,318 --> 00:03:25,980

plan them out next it's time for a quick

49

00:03:26,180 --> 00:03:27,989

herbal orientation for this guy who

50

00:03:28,188 --> 00:03:30,330

might be sent to run herb errands for

51

00:03:30,530 --> 00:03:33,149

cooking so you know green onions right

52

00:03:33,348 --> 00:03:36,659

pay attention now okay ready cilantro

53

00:03:36,859 --> 00:03:38,789

this one's dill if she wants to do

54

00:03:38,989 --> 00:03:40,368

that's what she wants this is chives

55

00:03:40,568 --> 00:03:42,539

it's kind of like onions but it's like

56

00:03:42,739 --> 00:03:45,929

tiny in this oregano this is called

57

00:03:46,128 --> 00:03:49,890

oregano this is called time this one is

58

00:03:50,090 --> 00:03:54,439

called sage this one is summer savory

59

00:03:54,639 --> 00:03:56,939

she wanted oregano when we send you out

60

00:03:57,139 --> 00:03:59,759

to get herbs take scissors and just clip

61

00:03:59,959 --> 00:04:01,020

off little pieces like that

62

00:04:01,219 --> 00:04:08,279

okay we're using this portable somatic

63

00:04:08,479 --> 00:04:11,129

cell count kit to detect subclinical

64

00:04:11,329 --> 00:04:12,779

mastitis now I didn't tell you why we're

65

00:04:12,979 --> 00:04:15,719

doing this we're doing this because when

66

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,718

we got Alice the milk cow her milk at

67

00:04:18,918 --> 00:04:22,110

least from back quarters tasted salty

68

00:04:22,310 --> 00:04:24,600

salty tasting milk can be a sign of

69

00:04:24,800 --> 00:04:26,699

mastitis we've also been reading about

70

00:04:26,899 --> 00:04:29,040

it and there's a lot of other possible

71

00:04:29,240 --> 00:04:30,449

reasons there's actually a ton of people

72

00:04:30,649 --> 00:04:33,019

right now on all the online cow boards

73

00:04:33,218 --> 00:04:35,189

posting about their salty tasting milk

74

00:04:35,389 --> 00:04:37,110

we're gonna do this test though this may

75

00:04:37,310 --> 00:04:39,809

help us know if she actually

76

00:04:40,009 --> 00:04:41,910

besides the concern would be that she

77

00:04:42,110 --> 00:04:43,588

might be like in an early stage of

78

00:04:43,788 --> 00:04:47,100

mastitis she actually her milk looks

79

00:04:47,300 --> 00:04:50,519

great and her udder looks fine so a lot

80

00:04:50,718 --> 00:04:53,429

is reassuring and we're gonna refer back

81

00:04:53,629 --> 00:04:55,709

to our instructions that Wilders eating

82

00:04:55,908 --> 00:04:59,968

four drops in milk okay we're okay no we

83

00:05:00,168 --> 00:05:02,549

only need four drops of milk on each one

84

00:05:02,749 --> 00:05:07,169

of these three four we're gonna rinse

85

00:05:07,369 --> 00:05:09,629

that out and then four drops of

86

00:05:09,829 --> 00:05:13,829

developer on each trip we've got to wait

87

00:05:14,028 --> 00:05:15,359

five minutes so while we're waiting I'm

88

00:05:15,559 --> 00:05:17,489

gonna taste all these milks I'm just

89

00:05:17,689 --> 00:05:31,170

tasting the left-back salty you're right

90

00:05:31,370 --> 00:05:34,538

back tastes really good to me

91

00:05:34,749 --> 00:05:37,649

right front tastes good left front

92

00:05:37,848 --> 00:05:38,879

tastes good they all taste good at the

93

00:05:39,079 --> 00:05:40,439

left back though tastes bad here's the

94

00:05:40,639 --> 00:05:43,139

test results left front is white right

95

00:05:43,338 --> 00:05:47,218

front right back and then here is the

96

00:05:47,418 --> 00:05:49,679

left back and what we're supposed to do

97

00:05:49,879 --> 00:05:52,649

is compare the color to this test strip

98

00:05:52,848 --> 00:05:54,569

honestly it's closest to this one which

99

00:05:54,769 --> 00:06:02,639

is 1500 cells times a thousand from Noli

100

00:06:02,838 --> 00:06:04,379

so it looks like she may have mastitis

101

00:06:04,579 --> 00:06:06,899

in her left back quarter this too this

102

00:06:07,098 --> 00:06:08,670

isn't a definitive diagnostic test

103

00:06:08,870 --> 00:06:10,468

format size but it looks like she

104

00:06:10,668 --> 00:06:14,189

probably does so we have some learning

105

00:06:14,389 --> 00:06:16,528

to do about treating mastitis we're

106

00:06:16,728 --> 00:06:18,059

doing everything right now we're milking

107

00:06:18,259 --> 00:06:19,920

her out in that back left quarter

108

00:06:20,120 --> 00:06:22,559

especially and her milk actually looks

109

00:06:22,759 --> 00:06:24,329

good it's not really it's not chunky or

110

00:06:24,528 --> 00:06:27,430

gloppy or anything

111

00:06:29,060 --> 00:06:31,960

this is by far my least favorite thing

112

00:06:32,160 --> 00:06:34,360

that we do around here I'm gonna dis bud

113

00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:37,449

all the goats there's a lot of reasons

114

00:06:37,649 --> 00:06:41,430

we do this I do think that it's not

115

00:06:41,629 --> 00:06:43,509

necessary if you're planning on keeping

116

00:06:43,709 --> 00:06:46,420

a goat but most people buying goats

117

00:06:46,620 --> 00:06:49,540

expect it and it would be a big turn-off

118

00:06:49,740 --> 00:06:52,000

to many people but we're going to knock

119

00:06:52,199 --> 00:06:53,590

it out really quick and let these babies

120

00:06:53,790 --> 00:06:57,830

go back to their mum

121

00:07:01,589 --> 00:07:03,559

all right you're done let's get you back

122

00:07:03,759 --> 00:07:07,520

to mommy now it's lucky to Luckys turn

123

00:07:07,720 --> 00:07:09,910

poor little lady sorry girl

124

00:07:10,110 --> 00:07:12,910

and that was Molly's turn sorry lady

125

00:07:13,110 --> 00:07:18,079

alright she's done these babies they're

126

00:07:18,279 --> 00:07:19,278

not gonna probably let me get close

127

00:07:19,478 --> 00:07:21,468

they're gonna say we remember what you

128

00:07:21,668 --> 00:07:23,960

just did to us hey guys

129

00:07:24,160 --> 00:07:28,929

a little burnt heads you guys are cute

130

00:07:29,129 --> 00:07:31,939

and that should be the lastest Budig I

131

00:07:32,139 --> 00:07:35,689

have to do this year she that calf is

132

00:07:35,889 --> 00:07:37,850

polled and we don't have a name for yet

133

00:07:38,050 --> 00:07:40,338

that calf and this guy you can see his

134

00:07:40,538 --> 00:07:42,290

horns I'm gonna let his horns grow

135

00:07:42,490 --> 00:07:44,959

though I'll tell you why because he's

136

00:07:45,158 --> 00:07:46,730

gonna be beefed within a year he's a

137

00:07:46,930 --> 00:07:48,350

good size two month old calf he's gonna

138

00:07:48,550 --> 00:07:50,540

be beefed within a year we're not we

139

00:07:50,740 --> 00:07:53,149

don't have to sell him yeah I just don't

140

00:07:53,348 --> 00:07:54,588

think it's gonna be a problem so he'll

141

00:07:54,788 --> 00:07:56,329

have some little horns by the time we

142

00:07:56,528 --> 00:07:57,739

eat but Sherman you can probably hear

143

00:07:57,939 --> 00:07:59,359

Breanna is mowing down here and you

144

00:07:59,559 --> 00:08:00,739

might say why aren't you mowing you're

145

00:08:00,939 --> 00:08:03,439

the man between us that's the more

146

00:08:03,639 --> 00:08:05,838

favorable job rather than we're doing

147

00:08:06,038 --> 00:08:07,910

work with this guy in your back I love

148

00:08:08,110 --> 00:08:09,829

wearing this guy but it just makes it

149

00:08:10,028 --> 00:08:12,619

hard to do work and so that is the job

150

00:08:12,819 --> 00:08:14,509

that both of us wanted she's doing it

151

00:08:14,709 --> 00:08:17,749

last time she mowed was the day that he

152

00:08:17,949 --> 00:08:21,079

was born I'm gonna link that video right

153

00:08:21,278 --> 00:08:23,809

up here I never get it right I'm gonna

154

00:08:24,009 --> 00:08:26,239

link that video right up here check it

155

00:08:26,439 --> 00:08:27,980

out it's actually hilarious if you

156

00:08:28,180 --> 00:08:29,689

haven't seen it check it out next I'm

157

00:08:29,889 --> 00:08:32,120

gonna burn this area I've burnt it

158

00:08:32,320 --> 00:08:33,468

before this is where our blueberries are

159

00:08:33,668 --> 00:08:35,269

going I want this grass to be dead so we

160

00:08:35,469 --> 00:08:36,828

can mulch and not have the grass come up

161

00:08:37,028 --> 00:08:39,588

through the mulch oh by the way guys our

162

00:08:39,788 --> 00:08:40,669

t-shirt

163

00:08:40,870 --> 00:08:43,218

Home Sweet Home stead is very popular

164

00:08:43,418 --> 00:08:46,099

t-shirt a ton of y'all loved it is for

165

00:08:46,299 --> 00:08:48,679

sale again the design color this time is

166

00:08:48,879 --> 00:08:51,198

white and there's a lot more choices of

167

00:08:51,399 --> 00:08:52,490

t-shirt colors there's some really cool

168

00:08:52,690 --> 00:08:54,159

ones I've got some coming in the mail

169

00:08:54,360 --> 00:08:57,498

here's a picture of the shirt check it

170

00:08:57,698 --> 00:09:00,318

out links below the video all right done

171

00:09:00,519 --> 00:09:03,289

with that that was fun but I ran out of

172

00:09:03,490 --> 00:09:06,229

camera battery I've carefully burned

173

00:09:06,429 --> 00:09:08,179

around my apple trees not right next to

174

00:09:08,379 --> 00:09:13,688

him hey how's mowing going good Wow

175

00:09:13,889 --> 00:09:16,758

inside this box or fence post pick tail

176

00:09:16,958 --> 00:09:19,188

fence post for rotational grazing we've

177

00:09:19,389 --> 00:09:21,559

been wanting to actually rotationally

178

00:09:21,759 --> 00:09:24,289

graze our pasture forever and we're just

179

00:09:24,490 --> 00:09:25,519

now getting the equipment where it's

180

00:09:25,720 --> 00:09:29,129

actually feasible to do it

181

00:09:42,698 --> 00:09:44,459

well folks it's 5:30

182

00:09:44,659 --> 00:09:46,969

I didn't get done everything on my list

183

00:09:47,169 --> 00:09:49,618

actually I was hoping to rototiller the

184

00:09:49,818 --> 00:09:51,659

garden today but there was a lot of goat

185

00:09:51,860 --> 00:09:53,308

chasing you didn't see unfortunately I

186

00:09:53,509 --> 00:09:55,139

fixed that there was a hole in the fence

187

00:09:55,339 --> 00:09:57,238

basically where the buck was squeezing

188

00:09:57,438 --> 00:09:59,368

out through the fence and he got out I

189

00:09:59,568 --> 00:10:02,248

think four times he took one bite off a

190

00:10:02,448 --> 00:10:07,919

cherry tree buck this has been another

191

00:10:08,120 --> 00:10:11,188

great day on the homestead I'll see you

192

00:10:11,389 --> 00:10:12,839

in another video yeah just go go go

193

00:10:13,039 --> 00:10:15,299

around here sweet homestead sir yeah

194

00:10:15,500 --> 00:10:16,738

don't forget to get your home sweet home

195

00:10:16,938 --> 00:10:18,599

set sure it actually looks sharper than

196

00:10:18,799 --> 00:10:20,698

that because this in white now and that

197

00:10:20,899 --> 00:10:24,188

white just pops up all the colors

198

00:10:28,059 --> 00:10:33,059

00:00:05,269 --> 00:00:15,130

[Music]

2

00:00:15,330 --> 00:00:17,280

because burned

3

00:00:17,480 --> 00:00:20,600

[Music]

4

00:00:22,660 --> 00:00:25,769

[Music]

5

00:00:25,969 --> 00:00:28,440

I'm out with the boys in the garden all

6

00:00:28,640 --> 00:00:30,570

the boys little buddies behind you here

7

00:00:30,769 --> 00:00:33,719

we're gonna plant five raspberry plants

8

00:00:33,920 --> 00:00:36,750

I was out here prepping this area to put

9

00:00:36,950 --> 00:00:38,659

in the raspberries digging up the soil

10

00:00:38,859 --> 00:00:41,909

adding a bunch of this partially

11

00:00:42,109 --> 00:00:44,669

composted manure and I found this cool

12

00:00:44,869 --> 00:00:47,369

little elderberry plant here which I

13

00:00:47,570 --> 00:00:50,070

will keep and that came from actually

14

00:00:50,270 --> 00:00:51,839

just burying some chunks of elderberry

15

00:00:52,039 --> 00:00:54,029

root that I dug up from the world these

16

00:00:54,229 --> 00:00:57,769

raspberries came from the Indiana

17

00:00:57,969 --> 00:01:01,559

Berrien plant company these are a

18

00:01:01,759 --> 00:01:05,399

variety called Nantahala and if you're

19

00:01:05,599 --> 00:01:07,049

from around here you'll recognize the

20

00:01:07,250 --> 00:01:09,030

name immediately this variety was

21

00:01:09,230 --> 00:01:15,090

developed by NC State and I bought it

22

00:01:15,290 --> 00:01:17,700

because supposed to taste good and do

23

00:01:17,900 --> 00:01:20,590

well around here

24

00:01:26,019 --> 00:01:30,619

it's okay dude all right that's that

25

00:01:30,819 --> 00:01:35,628

look at these silly cows hey lady

26

00:01:35,828 --> 00:01:43,738

any babies it's been pretty rainy the

27

00:01:43,938 --> 00:01:45,628

past two days which has been nice for

28

00:01:45,828 --> 00:01:48,439

the garden and pasture and everything

29

00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:51,890

the cow has been out in the rain we

30

00:01:52,090 --> 00:01:53,878

would pretty much try to keep her

31

00:01:54,078 --> 00:01:57,599

outside and have generally been happier

32

00:01:57,799 --> 00:02:00,329

overall when we kept the cow that we had

33

00:02:00,530 --> 00:02:03,418

out of the barn she will stay so much

34

00:02:03,618 --> 00:02:07,918

cleaner out here then she will in the

35

00:02:08,118 --> 00:02:08,399

barn

36

00:02:08,598 --> 00:02:13,710

and not only will she stay cleaner which

37

00:02:13,909 --> 00:02:17,099

makes milking cleaning easier keeps your

38

00:02:17,299 --> 00:02:20,939

milk cleaner the barn stays a lot

39

00:02:21,139 --> 00:02:22,710

cleaner too so everything stays cleaner

40

00:02:22,909 --> 00:02:24,599

if she just stays out and and the rain

41

00:02:24,799 --> 00:02:26,910

doesn't hurt her you know if it's storm

42

00:02:27,110 --> 00:02:28,050

and real bad we might let her in the

43

00:02:28,250 --> 00:02:31,819

barn but if I turn my gaze over this way

44

00:02:32,019 --> 00:02:34,140

there's an apple tree that's doing great

45

00:02:34,340 --> 00:02:37,680

but right in here there are two ducks

46

00:02:37,879 --> 00:02:40,680

sitting on duck eggs

47

00:02:40,879 --> 00:02:44,098

[Music]

48

00:02:47,879 --> 00:02:51,049

[Music]

49

00:02:54,169 --> 00:02:57,800

our raspberries are in the ground one

50

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:01,950

two three four five and then between

51

00:03:02,150 --> 00:03:04,830

this post and that corner up there we'll

52

00:03:05,030 --> 00:03:07,618

put in 13 more plants and I think it's

53

00:03:07,818 --> 00:03:10,140

five different varieties the potatoes

54

00:03:10,340 --> 00:03:11,759

are doing awesome I've started just

55

00:03:11,959 --> 00:03:13,740

mulching them with grass that I cut by

56

00:03:13,939 --> 00:03:15,170

hand from around the edge of the garden

57

00:03:15,370 --> 00:03:18,890

this lettuce looks awesome but it needs

58

00:03:19,090 --> 00:03:20,640

thinning but it's just growing

59

00:03:20,840 --> 00:03:23,550

beautifully this is joyful garden she

60

00:03:23,750 --> 00:03:26,100

needs to do some work on it these peas

61

00:03:26,300 --> 00:03:28,850

along the fence are looking really puny

62

00:03:29,050 --> 00:03:31,950

so last night I cut the grass all along

63

00:03:32,150 --> 00:03:34,259

the fence to try to give him a little

64

00:03:34,459 --> 00:03:37,020

more sunlight and then I fertilized them

65

00:03:37,219 --> 00:03:40,200

this morning with some fish fertilizer

66

00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,780

to try to just get them to pop the

67

00:03:42,979 --> 00:03:45,060

asparagus is doing awesome and there's

68

00:03:45,259 --> 00:03:46,950

just a nice thick steak look at this

69

00:03:47,150 --> 00:03:49,770

giant here and then under the feet of

70

00:03:49,969 --> 00:03:53,550

the asparagus there are thousands of

71

00:03:53,750 --> 00:03:57,780

little asparagus plants here all along

72

00:03:57,979 --> 00:04:00,870

so if we let it this whole area here and

73

00:04:01,069 --> 00:04:01,530

here

74

00:04:01,729 --> 00:04:04,289

will turn into a big giant asparagus bed

75

00:04:04,489 --> 00:04:06,840

the rhubarb looks really great and

76

00:04:07,039 --> 00:04:09,450

there's comfrey coming up down here in

77

00:04:09,650 --> 00:04:12,960

the path the strawberry bed looks really

78

00:04:13,159 --> 00:04:15,719

really good and here are onions which

79

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,900

this was my last project is weeding and

80

00:04:19,100 --> 00:04:21,020

mulching this is gonna be my next one

81

00:04:21,220 --> 00:04:23,189

weeding the onions probably mulching

82

00:04:23,389 --> 00:04:25,439

them in some way and here's Chinese

83

00:04:25,639 --> 00:04:28,680

chives which are pretty tasty the garlic

84

00:04:28,879 --> 00:04:33,000

looks good but needs weeding kale the

85

00:04:33,199 --> 00:04:38,670

same beets the same spinach looks pretty

86

00:04:38,870 --> 00:04:43,949

good that is they think radishes green

87

00:04:44,149 --> 00:04:45,689

onions the kids are constantly eating

88

00:04:45,889 --> 00:04:47,278

these you can see all these tops pulled

89

00:04:47,478 --> 00:04:49,939

off that's from children eating them and

90

00:04:50,139 --> 00:04:52,920

then if some radishes in here that one

91

00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:54,689

actually it's a nice little radish in

92

00:04:54,889 --> 00:04:58,139

there let's pull that up oh what a

93

00:04:58,339 --> 00:05:00,300

pretty little radish we'll bring that

94

00:05:00,500 --> 00:05:04,680

inside probably more and then cilantro

95

00:05:04,879 --> 00:05:06,280

beautifully green

96

00:05:06,480 --> 00:05:11,680

growing starting here we have herbs dill

97

00:05:11,879 --> 00:05:14,139

plants here and then lots of little dill

98

00:05:14,339 --> 00:05:16,960

coming up chives bunching onions here

99

00:05:17,160 --> 00:05:19,600

just coming up after much delay

100

00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:26,020

you know oregano thyme sage tarragon I'm

101

00:05:26,220 --> 00:05:29,850

pretty sure I'll show you how our

102

00:05:30,050 --> 00:05:32,050

cabbage is doing in this tunnel it's

103

00:05:32,250 --> 00:05:34,329

doing awesome and it is not being eaten

104

00:05:34,529 --> 00:05:37,030

by caterpillars at least I saw a little

105

00:05:37,230 --> 00:05:42,370

slug damage on one of them look at this

106

00:05:42,569 --> 00:05:46,150

a lot of weeds but the plants look

107

00:05:46,350 --> 00:05:47,980

awesome and then you're getting they're

108

00:05:48,180 --> 00:05:50,079

big and they're strong really pretty

109

00:05:50,279 --> 00:05:53,410

little plants there this portion of the

110

00:05:53,610 --> 00:05:55,120

garden behind me is almost completely

111

00:05:55,319 --> 00:05:56,680

planted there's a little open real

112

00:05:56,879 --> 00:05:59,079

estate here down at the end there and

113

00:05:59,279 --> 00:06:01,840

then in the ends of those beds but our

114

00:06:02,040 --> 00:06:04,660

early gardens almost totally in next

115

00:06:04,860 --> 00:06:08,860

comes this mess up here this part of the

116

00:06:09,060 --> 00:06:11,770

garden as far as the soil goes is pretty

117

00:06:11,970 --> 00:06:13,449

significantly worse than what's behind

118

00:06:13,649 --> 00:06:16,540

me down here we've put a ton actually

119

00:06:16,740 --> 00:06:19,139

multiple tons honestly literally of

120

00:06:19,339 --> 00:06:23,050

organic manure compost into this lower

121

00:06:23,250 --> 00:06:25,210

portion and just not as much into the

122

00:06:25,410 --> 00:06:27,639

upper portion so we're gonna row to till

123

00:06:27,839 --> 00:06:30,069

this upper portion so that's what's next

124

00:06:30,269 --> 00:06:31,240

in the garden and that's pretty much

125

00:06:31,439 --> 00:06:33,189

wraps up our garden tour let's go see

126

00:06:33,389 --> 00:06:34,730

some baby goats

127

00:06:34,930 --> 00:06:38,050

[Music]

128

00:06:38,250 --> 00:06:41,088

so far this is the most vigorous of all

129

00:06:41,288 --> 00:06:44,480

the apple trees and it's a Liberty all

130

00:06:44,680 --> 00:06:46,759

of these trees are putting on a good

131

00:06:46,959 --> 00:06:52,910

amount of new growth this is a straight

132

00:06:53,110 --> 00:06:56,990

start break star and we're gonna have to

133

00:06:57,189 --> 00:06:59,199

pick these off here but this thing has

134

00:06:59,399 --> 00:07:02,240

probably twenty or thirty little tiny

135

00:07:02,439 --> 00:07:05,778

though apples on yeah that's just a

136

00:07:05,978 --> 00:07:10,550

second year in the ground tree I got

137

00:07:10,750 --> 00:07:15,860

some hay for you do you want it there's

138

00:07:16,060 --> 00:07:18,139

a few stray chickens but we'll let the

139

00:07:18,339 --> 00:07:21,538

majority of these chickens

140

00:07:28,709 --> 00:07:30,579

how are you all doing we all do it

141

00:07:30,779 --> 00:07:32,730

hanging out here is beautiful outside

142

00:07:32,930 --> 00:07:35,790

what hang you that one here silly

143

00:07:35,990 --> 00:07:39,338

here's a little lucky the cutest Scout

144

00:07:39,538 --> 00:07:42,968

in the world are you patting that goat

145

00:07:43,168 --> 00:07:45,999

are you petting the goat that's so sweet

146

00:07:46,199 --> 00:07:48,860

back there

147

00:07:50,180 --> 00:08:02,949

do you love that goat Wilder sweet very

148

00:08:03,149 --> 00:08:06,879

far you're trying to come in here go

149

00:08:07,079 --> 00:08:16,870

play if I couldn't interest you in some

150

00:08:17,069 --> 00:08:18,999

hey maybe I could interested interest

151

00:08:19,199 --> 00:08:26,528

you in some fly spray ma'am I think

152

00:08:26,728 --> 00:08:28,778

that's why she's making that little bit

153

00:08:28,978 --> 00:08:31,468

of a bellowing film so bad this year

154

00:08:31,668 --> 00:08:33,669

well she doesn't like it so she's

155

00:08:33,870 --> 00:08:37,059

running from me what count does like

156

00:08:37,259 --> 00:08:39,699

being straight dolly never liked fly

157

00:08:39,899 --> 00:08:42,819

spray I did get thumb on her just now so

158

00:08:43,019 --> 00:08:43,929

hopefully that will help her be more

159

00:08:44,129 --> 00:08:46,639

comfortable

160

00:08:56,379 --> 00:08:58,709

well that's gonna about wrap it up for

161

00:08:58,909 --> 00:09:02,519

our impromptu garden tour and showing

162

00:09:02,720 --> 00:09:04,469

you around the homestead it's been

163

00:09:04,669 --> 00:09:05,969

another great day on the homestead thank

164

00:09:06,169 --> 00:09:08,759

you for joining us and we'll see you

[Music]

2

00:00:15,330 --> 00:00:17,280

because burned

3

00:00:17,480 --> 00:00:20,600

[Music]

4

00:00:22,660 --> 00:00:25,769

[Music]

5

00:00:25,969 --> 00:00:28,440

I'm out with the boys in the garden all

6

00:00:28,640 --> 00:00:30,570

the boys little buddies behind you here

7

00:00:30,769 --> 00:00:33,719

we're gonna plant five raspberry plants

8

00:00:33,920 --> 00:00:36,750

I was out here prepping this area to put

9

00:00:36,950 --> 00:00:38,659

in the raspberries digging up the soil

10

00:00:38,859 --> 00:00:41,909

adding a bunch of this partially

11

00:00:42,109 --> 00:00:44,669

composted manure and I found this cool

12

00:00:44,869 --> 00:00:47,369

little elderberry plant here which I

13

00:00:47,570 --> 00:00:50,070

will keep and that came from actually

14

00:00:50,270 --> 00:00:51,839

just burying some chunks of elderberry

15

00:00:52,039 --> 00:00:54,029

root that I dug up from the world these

16

00:00:54,229 --> 00:00:57,769

raspberries came from the Indiana

17

00:00:57,969 --> 00:01:01,559

Berrien plant company these are a

18

00:01:01,759 --> 00:01:05,399

variety called Nantahala and if you're

19

00:01:05,599 --> 00:01:07,049

from around here you'll recognize the

20

00:01:07,250 --> 00:01:09,030

name immediately this variety was

21

00:01:09,230 --> 00:01:15,090

developed by NC State and I bought it

22

00:01:15,290 --> 00:01:17,700

because supposed to taste good and do

23

00:01:17,900 --> 00:01:20,590

well around here

24

00:01:26,019 --> 00:01:30,619

it's okay dude all right that's that

25

00:01:30,819 --> 00:01:35,628

look at these silly cows hey lady

26

00:01:35,828 --> 00:01:43,738

any babies it's been pretty rainy the

27

00:01:43,938 --> 00:01:45,628

past two days which has been nice for

28

00:01:45,828 --> 00:01:48,439

the garden and pasture and everything

29

00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:51,890

the cow has been out in the rain we

30

00:01:52,090 --> 00:01:53,878

would pretty much try to keep her

31

00:01:54,078 --> 00:01:57,599

outside and have generally been happier

32

00:01:57,799 --> 00:02:00,329

overall when we kept the cow that we had

33

00:02:00,530 --> 00:02:03,418

out of the barn she will stay so much

34

00:02:03,618 --> 00:02:07,918

cleaner out here then she will in the

35

00:02:08,118 --> 00:02:08,399

barn

36

00:02:08,598 --> 00:02:13,710

and not only will she stay cleaner which

37

00:02:13,909 --> 00:02:17,099

makes milking cleaning easier keeps your

38

00:02:17,299 --> 00:02:20,939

milk cleaner the barn stays a lot

39

00:02:21,139 --> 00:02:22,710

cleaner too so everything stays cleaner

40

00:02:22,909 --> 00:02:24,599

if she just stays out and and the rain

41

00:02:24,799 --> 00:02:26,910

doesn't hurt her you know if it's storm

42

00:02:27,110 --> 00:02:28,050

and real bad we might let her in the

43

00:02:28,250 --> 00:02:31,819

barn but if I turn my gaze over this way

44

00:02:32,019 --> 00:02:34,140

there's an apple tree that's doing great

45

00:02:34,340 --> 00:02:37,680

but right in here there are two ducks

46

00:02:37,879 --> 00:02:40,680

sitting on duck eggs

47

00:02:40,879 --> 00:02:44,098

[Music]

48

00:02:47,879 --> 00:02:51,049

[Music]

49

00:02:54,169 --> 00:02:57,800

our raspberries are in the ground one

50

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:01,950

two three four five and then between

51

00:03:02,150 --> 00:03:04,830

this post and that corner up there we'll

52

00:03:05,030 --> 00:03:07,618

put in 13 more plants and I think it's

53

00:03:07,818 --> 00:03:10,140

five different varieties the potatoes

54

00:03:10,340 --> 00:03:11,759

are doing awesome I've started just

55

00:03:11,959 --> 00:03:13,740

mulching them with grass that I cut by

56

00:03:13,939 --> 00:03:15,170

hand from around the edge of the garden

57

00:03:15,370 --> 00:03:18,890

this lettuce looks awesome but it needs

58

00:03:19,090 --> 00:03:20,640

thinning but it's just growing

59

00:03:20,840 --> 00:03:23,550

beautifully this is joyful garden she

60

00:03:23,750 --> 00:03:26,100

needs to do some work on it these peas

61

00:03:26,300 --> 00:03:28,850

along the fence are looking really puny

62

00:03:29,050 --> 00:03:31,950

so last night I cut the grass all along

63

00:03:32,150 --> 00:03:34,259

the fence to try to give him a little

64

00:03:34,459 --> 00:03:37,020

more sunlight and then I fertilized them

65

00:03:37,219 --> 00:03:40,200

this morning with some fish fertilizer

66

00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,780

to try to just get them to pop the

67

00:03:42,979 --> 00:03:45,060

asparagus is doing awesome and there's

68

00:03:45,259 --> 00:03:46,950

just a nice thick steak look at this

69

00:03:47,150 --> 00:03:49,770

giant here and then under the feet of

70

00:03:49,969 --> 00:03:53,550

the asparagus there are thousands of

71

00:03:53,750 --> 00:03:57,780

little asparagus plants here all along

72

00:03:57,979 --> 00:04:00,870

so if we let it this whole area here and

73

00:04:01,069 --> 00:04:01,530

here

74

00:04:01,729 --> 00:04:04,289

will turn into a big giant asparagus bed

75

00:04:04,489 --> 00:04:06,840

the rhubarb looks really great and

76

00:04:07,039 --> 00:04:09,450

there's comfrey coming up down here in

77

00:04:09,650 --> 00:04:12,960

the path the strawberry bed looks really

78

00:04:13,159 --> 00:04:15,719

really good and here are onions which

79

00:04:15,919 --> 00:04:18,900

this was my last project is weeding and

80

00:04:19,100 --> 00:04:21,020

mulching this is gonna be my next one

81

00:04:21,220 --> 00:04:23,189

weeding the onions probably mulching

82

00:04:23,389 --> 00:04:25,439

them in some way and here's Chinese

83

00:04:25,639 --> 00:04:28,680

chives which are pretty tasty the garlic

84

00:04:28,879 --> 00:04:33,000

looks good but needs weeding kale the

85

00:04:33,199 --> 00:04:38,670

same beets the same spinach looks pretty

86

00:04:38,870 --> 00:04:43,949

good that is they think radishes green

87

00:04:44,149 --> 00:04:45,689

onions the kids are constantly eating

88

00:04:45,889 --> 00:04:47,278

these you can see all these tops pulled

89

00:04:47,478 --> 00:04:49,939

off that's from children eating them and

90

00:04:50,139 --> 00:04:52,920

then if some radishes in here that one

91

00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:54,689

actually it's a nice little radish in

92

00:04:54,889 --> 00:04:58,139

there let's pull that up oh what a

93

00:04:58,339 --> 00:05:00,300

pretty little radish we'll bring that

94

00:05:00,500 --> 00:05:04,680

inside probably more and then cilantro

95

00:05:04,879 --> 00:05:06,280

beautifully green

96

00:05:06,480 --> 00:05:11,680

growing starting here we have herbs dill

97

00:05:11,879 --> 00:05:14,139

plants here and then lots of little dill

98

00:05:14,339 --> 00:05:16,960

coming up chives bunching onions here

99

00:05:17,160 --> 00:05:19,600

just coming up after much delay

100

00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:26,020

you know oregano thyme sage tarragon I'm

101

00:05:26,220 --> 00:05:29,850

pretty sure I'll show you how our

102

00:05:30,050 --> 00:05:32,050

cabbage is doing in this tunnel it's

103

00:05:32,250 --> 00:05:34,329

doing awesome and it is not being eaten

104

00:05:34,529 --> 00:05:37,030

by caterpillars at least I saw a little

105

00:05:37,230 --> 00:05:42,370

slug damage on one of them look at this

106

00:05:42,569 --> 00:05:46,150

a lot of weeds but the plants look

107

00:05:46,350 --> 00:05:47,980

awesome and then you're getting they're

108

00:05:48,180 --> 00:05:50,079

big and they're strong really pretty

109

00:05:50,279 --> 00:05:53,410

little plants there this portion of the

110

00:05:53,610 --> 00:05:55,120

garden behind me is almost completely

111

00:05:55,319 --> 00:05:56,680

planted there's a little open real

112

00:05:56,879 --> 00:05:59,079

estate here down at the end there and

113

00:05:59,279 --> 00:06:01,840

then in the ends of those beds but our

114

00:06:02,040 --> 00:06:04,660

early gardens almost totally in next

115

00:06:04,860 --> 00:06:08,860

comes this mess up here this part of the

116

00:06:09,060 --> 00:06:11,770

garden as far as the soil goes is pretty

117

00:06:11,970 --> 00:06:13,449

significantly worse than what's behind

118

00:06:13,649 --> 00:06:16,540

me down here we've put a ton actually

119

00:06:16,740 --> 00:06:19,139

multiple tons honestly literally of

120

00:06:19,339 --> 00:06:23,050

organic manure compost into this lower

121

00:06:23,250 --> 00:06:25,210

portion and just not as much into the

122

00:06:25,410 --> 00:06:27,639

upper portion so we're gonna row to till

123

00:06:27,839 --> 00:06:30,069

this upper portion so that's what's next

124

00:06:30,269 --> 00:06:31,240

in the garden and that's pretty much

125

00:06:31,439 --> 00:06:33,189

wraps up our garden tour let's go see

126

00:06:33,389 --> 00:06:34,730

some baby goats

127

00:06:34,930 --> 00:06:38,050

[Music]

128

00:06:38,250 --> 00:06:41,088

so far this is the most vigorous of all

129

00:06:41,288 --> 00:06:44,480

the apple trees and it's a Liberty all

130

00:06:44,680 --> 00:06:46,759

of these trees are putting on a good

131

00:06:46,959 --> 00:06:52,910

amount of new growth this is a straight

132

00:06:53,110 --> 00:06:56,990

start break star and we're gonna have to

133

00:06:57,189 --> 00:06:59,199

pick these off here but this thing has

134

00:06:59,399 --> 00:07:02,240

probably twenty or thirty little tiny

135

00:07:02,439 --> 00:07:05,778

though apples on yeah that's just a

136

00:07:05,978 --> 00:07:10,550

second year in the ground tree I got

137

00:07:10,750 --> 00:07:15,860

some hay for you do you want it there's

138

00:07:16,060 --> 00:07:18,139

a few stray chickens but we'll let the

139

00:07:18,339 --> 00:07:21,538

majority of these chickens

140

00:07:28,709 --> 00:07:30,579

how are you all doing we all do it

141

00:07:30,779 --> 00:07:32,730

hanging out here is beautiful outside

142

00:07:32,930 --> 00:07:35,790

what hang you that one here silly

143

00:07:35,990 --> 00:07:39,338

here's a little lucky the cutest Scout

144

00:07:39,538 --> 00:07:42,968

in the world are you patting that goat

145

00:07:43,168 --> 00:07:45,999

are you petting the goat that's so sweet

146

00:07:46,199 --> 00:07:48,860

back there

147

00:07:50,180 --> 00:08:02,949

do you love that goat Wilder sweet very

148

00:08:03,149 --> 00:08:06,879

far you're trying to come in here go

149

00:08:07,079 --> 00:08:16,870

play if I couldn't interest you in some

150

00:08:17,069 --> 00:08:18,999

hey maybe I could interested interest

151

00:08:19,199 --> 00:08:26,528

you in some fly spray ma'am I think

152

00:08:26,728 --> 00:08:28,778

that's why she's making that little bit

153

00:08:28,978 --> 00:08:31,468

of a bellowing film so bad this year

154

00:08:31,668 --> 00:08:33,669

well she doesn't like it so she's

155

00:08:33,870 --> 00:08:37,059

running from me what count does like

156

00:08:37,259 --> 00:08:39,699

being straight dolly never liked fly

157

00:08:39,899 --> 00:08:42,819

spray I did get thumb on her just now so

158

00:08:43,019 --> 00:08:43,929

hopefully that will help her be more

159

00:08:44,129 --> 00:08:46,639

comfortable

160

00:08:56,379 --> 00:08:58,709

well that's gonna about wrap it up for

161

00:08:58,909 --> 00:09:02,519

our impromptu garden tour and showing

162

00:09:02,720 --> 00:09:04,469

you around the homestead it's been

163

00:09:04,669 --> 00:09:05,969

164

00:09:06,169 --> 00:09:08,759

you for joining us and we'll see you

165

00:09:08,960 --> 00:09:12,319
